The X Factor excitement is turned up a notch this weekend as the final 16 contestants took to the stage for the start of the live shows last night. They've been through auditions, Bootcamp and the Judges' Houses stages of the show and beat off competition from thousands of others. Now, the final 16 are preparing to perform live in front of The X Factor judges and an audience of millions to win The X Factor 2011 and scoop a £1m recording deal. Last night's theme is UK v US, with each act singing a big hit from either side of the pond. Tonight will also see the UK v the US as Matt Cardle and Cee Lo Green perform, before each judge sends home one act, leaving three acts they most believe can win through to next week's public vote.

After weeks of auditions and deliberations, the competition truly begins as the 16 remaining acts take to the stage for the first live show. To recap: Gary Barlow has got the boys - Frankie Cocozza, Marcus Collins, Craig Colton and James Michael; Kelly Rowland mentors the girls - Misha Bryan, Janet Devlin, Sophie Habibis and Amelia Lily; and Tulisa Contostavlos is looking after the groups - 2 Shoes, Rhythmix, Nu Vibe and the Risk. But Louis Walsh - the only remaining original judge - will be hoping to show his rivals how it's done with the over-25s - Sami Brookes, Kitty Brucknell, Jonjo Kerr and Johnny Robinson. On this occasion, viewers do not have the chance to vote for their favourites - as the judges provide opinions and defend their own acts - before having to vote one of their own acts off the show. Indeed, four of the shower are being culled this weekend.
