  • Created as a secondary character for "The Huckleberry Hound Show," Yogi had star power from the get-go.

    8.0
"Yogi Bear's Big Break" is a perfectly appropriate title for Yogi's first episode. Children can laugh at Yogi's pratfalls, while adults can identify with the bear's motive for his escape attempts (he's fed up, pardon the irony, with bear-patronizing tourists who roam his Jellystone Park habitat). Yogi plays dead, disguises himself as a departing tourist, digs a tunnel, and tries to launch himself over the park wall.

The animation is very limited, but the directors (William Hanna, Joseph Barbera) and animator (Kenneth Muse) do their best with what they have, aided by good work from story men Dan Gordon and Charles Shows. Yogi's behavior is atypical (he is the antithesis of his later "pic-a-nic"-raiding self), but funny, and his fame comes as no surprise.
