  • Mike has managed to get a video and he and Vyvyian plan to watch it but then a mysterious package arrives from Transvaal...

    9.5
This episode is really funny because when Vyvyan is trying to set it up, he apparantly fills the machine with washing - up liquid and it stuffs it up. Also people keep asking him if they have a video and he gets really annoyed and then says that if one more person asks him that, he is going to smash their head through the window. Then Neil asks him and so he takes Neil over to the window, pulls it out of the wall and smashes over Neils head. That is really funny! The scene where Neil has a bath is a bit gross though...moreless
  • The boys anticipate a night of video viewing, but it all goes a bit pear-shaped when a suspect package arrives ...

"Nasty" is my all-time favourite episode of The Young Ones. This is mainly due to the guest band, since it happened to be my all-time favourite band. The Damned, who wrote their song, Nasty, especially for this appearance, put in an excellent performance. Aside from that, it is an extremely funny episode. The boys have acquired a video player, and are engrossed in setting it up in preparation for a night of viewing when a mysterious parcel arrives. It turns out to contain a vampire, although he claims to be a driving instructor from Johannesburg. Cue much hilarity - and demolition - as the four of them try to elude the vampire.moreless

      Rick: I wasn't doing anything.
Neil: Well, I can't have heard anything, can I?
Rick: And anyway Neil, don't think that me, Mike and Vyvyan don't know exactly what you get up to in there. So I wouldn't go around spilling the beans if I was you!
Neil: What do you know about the beans?!

    • Vyvian: It's a video nasty!

Vyv: He doesn't eat carrots, Neil, he sticks 'em down his underpants to impress the girls.

  • NOTES (3)

    • The region 1 DVD edits out Neil singing the line "Hello, darkness, my old friend" while in the bath.

    • Chris Barrie is credited as Christopher Barrie. He would eventually shorten his name to avoid confusion with Doctor Who and Tripods director Christopher Barry.

    • The Radio Times description says: "This week a video head helically scans the coercivity medium taking full advantage of the inherit wide hysteresic characteristics and fully saturating the magnetic structure of the oxide emulsion with predictably hilarious results."

  • ALLUSIONS (1)

    • Vicar: Ashes to ashes...
Rick: Funk to funky. We know Major Tom's a Junkie
This is an allusion to the David Bowie single called Ashes to Ashes from the 1980 album Scary Monsters. Both the single and the album were #1 hits in the UK. This was David Bowie's return to his Major Tom character from Space Oddity which was alluded to in this shows S1 Ep5 Interesting.
