This play was the first by Harold Pinter ever to be performed on British television (although a radio version had been previously produced). This first TV production had taken place on April 24th, 1960, as a live segment of the "Armchair Theatre" series on ITV. Both Pinter and his then wife, Vivien Merchant, had appeared in it in supporting parts, with Tom Bell in the leading role. The radio version had been broadcast only two months earlier, with Pinter and his wife in the same parts.
