Theatre in America

Show Summary

Theatre in America is a drama series from the American Public Broadcasting System that brings to life literary classics and is a spin-off of the British drama series, Masterpiece Theatre. PBS producers take the great dramas sitting on American library shelves, and ask audiences to put their books away to watch a Jane Eyre novel or Nancy Drew mystery broadcast. Both up-and-coming and veteran actors take on the principal roles during the series, with Patrick Stewart paying King Henry in The Six Wives of Henry VIII, and Peter O'Toole taking on the role of Jolyon Forsyte in John Galsworthy's novel, The Forsyte Saga. Other productions include Robert Graves, I, Claudius, Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist and The American by Henry James. Sarah Phelps' adaptation of Dickens' novel, Great Expectations, is also showcased in the episodes. Theatre in America varies in content, changing each week to include murder mysteries, romantic dramas, comedies, famous playwrights and Shakespearean tragedies.
