Len, the fiance of Jim's cousin eve, says at one point that in america we're "over-committed to happy endings.' This is one episode that puts the lie to that. In what at first looks like it's going to be an episode about two young people Jim will financially help to get married, this becomes a much more complex and unexpected episode, as eve turns into the satandard runaway bride, and then into a gambling obssessed young woman. Again, we think Jim is going to straighten things out, but in this case he can't, despite his best efforts, and as his efforts fail and he removes himself from the story, the young couple realizes that this marriage isn't for them. Deftly written ,beautifuly acted by all parties, even the minor ones, this is an unheralded classic.
