This is Melanie Mayron's directorial debut on thirtysomething, or anywhere else, for that matter. She's the fourth cast member to direct an episode of the show, after Peter Horton, Ken Olin and Timothy Busfield. There are several apparent homages to the famous Italian film director Federico Fellini, including the opening and closing scenes, which recall the traffic jam in which Marcello Mastroianni was caught in the film 8 1/2 (1963).
Music used includes "Tequila," the chart-topping instrumental hit for the Champs from 1958, played during a montage of shots of Elliot directing; and the opening to Richard Strauss' tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra (Thus Spake Zarathustra), known to many from its use in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. It's heard here when Elliot is about to see his finished commercial.
Peter Horton and Mel Harris are credited but don't appear.
