This Is England '86

Show Summary

This Is England '86 is a drama that takes place at a time when Top Gun was in cinemas and when millions of Brits were unemployed - 1986. The show picks up a few years after the original 2006 film This Is England, and follows Shaun (Thomas Turgoose) as he comes to the realisation that he'll have to do something with his life after his final school exams. Shane Meadows, who wrote and directed the film, returns to helm this four-part series, with Jack Thorne (Skins) co-writing the scripts.

It made a good film, and it started off well in the first 10 minutes of the TV show, but it's been a bit slow.

From the first episode alone I'm not completely sold. There are some great one liners such as "I had an accident with a lava lamp", and the production values are obviously quite high. The storylines themselves, however, are quite slow and fairly uninteresting.

As a fan of the movie it was good to see how the characters have progressed. And it's good to see north England folk getting some love on TV (other than just on Shameless). But there's just something missing. I'll watch the rest of the series and see if I can pinpoint what.moreless
