Don't get me wrong, it was great to have a national show come to my hometown. But the entire thing is manipulated. All the crying scenes were shot at least five times, after the first take I doubt they were actual tears. The water boy isn't suffering from some extreme illness, he's just like everyone else in the world... overcoming an obstacle on the path to where he wants to go. The library was a wonderful idea, but New Philadelphia, being the county seat already has a very nicely equipped library and the village of Mineral City is finding it difficult to fund the new library. At least they didn't make my town look like we live in rural Appalacia, which isn't the case.moreless

The New Philadelphia and Dover episode of Three Wishes did a great thing for three very deserving people, but to the citizens of New Philadelphia, it was a disgrace. The show took over our town square for an entire week, forcing a detour through town. But this didn't matter, because we were excited to have them in town.

Through the local grapevine, the whole town learned of the three wishes that were granted as they happened. None of the three major wishes were actually granted in the town of New Philadelphia.

First of all, Dover’s trainer was given the opportunity to train with the Cleveland Browns this summer. This was an awesome wish, but the TVs… not the best idea. The boys on that team ALL have televisions in their homes and did not need new widescreen HD televisions. The money could have been better spent. And yes, I understand that it was a sponsor who donated those TVs, but the donation could have gone somewhere else. Computers in a local school, perhaps… Oh, and because of certain regulations of the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) the boys have not yet actually received these TVs and it has not yet been decided whether they will receive them at all.

Next, the young girl who collected over 6,000 books for her town and wished for a library. Once again, this was a wonderful wish, but not handled in the best way. This girl is not from New Philadelphia. The library was wonderful, but the show made it sound like New Philadelphia was a little tiny hick town without a library. WRONG. New Philadelphia has a very nice library. This new library is in a small neighboring town.

Finally, the teacher from Claymont. This was my favorite wish. She was a very deserving woman. Claymont is the school district for Dennison and Uhrichsville, Ohio. The teacher was not a New Philadelphia teacher, but she DEFINITELY deserved her wish. I give the show a lot of credit for this one.

Thank you, Three Wishes, for what you did in our county. You did some really nice things for deserving people. Next time, try to keep your facts straight and if you’re going to do a show on the county, call it Tuscarawas County.

Finally, some random comments about the episode:

    • The NPHS girls who were taught a dance by a professional choreographer were NOT cheerleaders. The QTs are the school’s dance team.

    • Dover and New Philadelphia are not best friends. We are major rivals.

    • Homecoming is by no means the “big game” around here. The big game is Dover-Phila.

    • Again, New Philadelphia DOES have a library, and it is very nice.

    • And a cute side-note: I have a friend that I’ve known since she was 2, and it was pretty cool to see her face on National Televison!
