Show Summary

Tightrope featured Mike Connors as Nick Stone, a cop who was assigned the task of infiltrating organized crime as an undercover special agent. Many of the police units he helped did not know he was a plant, requiring him to dodge bullets from both sides. Stone wore a gun up front like normal, but also had a hidden one holstered sideways on the back of his belt with the result being any time he was frisked for a weapon, they always quit the search after the first weapon was found, leaving him still armed for the final showdown. Although the series was a hit with viewers, it was eventually canceled due to pressure and complaints about excessive violence. For syndication, the show was heavily edited to remove most of its violence and grittiness, causing the episodes to loose the edge of their original showing.

  • Mike Connors as an undercover cop who carried a gun hidden in the small of his back.

This was Mike Connors first great series (1959). He played a slick undercover cop who carried a gun hidden in the small of his back. When he was patted down by criminals, no one thought to check out that part of his anatomy. Connors played the role as a slick, lady killer a la Richard Diamond. But that was an act. He was basically an unpretentious cop who lived in constant fear of being found out. There were great scenes of a lonely Connors walking the city streets at night narrating his thoughts. The show was a fast-paced thirty minutes. At the end of each episode when the police arrive to take Connors cohorts prisioner-"in the confusion one man escaped-me." The show might have been better titled "Undercover" or "The Undercover Man". Connors was so good in "Tightrope" that he was in demand for movies when it ended.moreless
  • An undercover cop working with the bad guys trying to catch them before a crime was commited.

Tightrope was an exciting show and Mike Connors became really famous after this one, Mannix came years later and it was very good too, but Tightrope was exceptional. This undercover agent always carried his gun in a holster at his back, so the bad guys never found it until it was too late and usually when he was pointing the gun at them at the end of the show. "In the confussion only one escaped...Me" That was the phrase that made all the audience clap when the police arrived at the crime scene and Mike Connors was somehow getting out of it fast.moreless
