  • Mike Connors as an undercover cop who carried a gun hidden in the small of his back.

This was Mike Connors first great series (1959). He played a slick undercover cop who carried a gun hidden in the small of his back. When he was patted down by criminals, no one thought to check out that part of his anatomy. Connors played the role as a slick, lady killer a la Richard Diamond. But that was an act. He was basically an unpretentious cop who lived in constant fear of being found out. There were great scenes of a lonely Connors walking the city streets at night narrating his thoughts. The show was a fast-paced thirty minutes. At the end of each episode when the police arrive to take Connors cohorts prisioner-"in the confusion one man escaped-me." The show might have been better titled "Undercover" or "The Undercover Man". Connors was so good in "Tightrope" that he was in demand for movies when it ended.
