Episode Summary

Floral Patton / Orphan Substitute

Floral Patton: General Patton is running a flower shop. The Time Squad has to help Patton discover for himself that his love for military tactics and lack of human compassion only belong in one place- in the U.S. Army. Orphan Substitute: Tuddrussel and Otto get into a fight while on a mission to visit George W. Bush in 2002. Otto leaves Tuddrussel and Larry to cool off and unfortunately runs into his "Nun too holy" former caretaker Sister Thornly, who quickly steals him back to the orphanage. But Tuddrussel especially does not notice and makes Larry desperately try to find another genius orphan who can help them out.

I love this series, I love the writing, the story, the characters, the plot- this show got so good during the second season and knowing that it was supposed to have a third, it's such a bummer that it was canned way before its time. Floral Patton is good, it's a straight forward episode that kept to the "Time Squad" formula- Otto manages to talk the historical figure into doing what the person was supposed to do. Larry is effeminate and doesn't want to play rough. Tuddrussel wants to kick the crap out of somebody and ends up being someone's chew toy. All around, it was a fair 3 out of 5. Wasn't bad, wasn't spectacular, it's just good.

Orphan Substitute on the other hand, is a base breaker. Some people like it a lot. But a lot of fans, including my self, do not care for this episode in how Otto is treated. The story itself isn't bad. It had a lot of good things about it. Like Otto's scrapbook and testing Otto's and Tuddrussel's relationship and of course George W. Bush. Those were all very good ideas. But the thing is, Tuddrussel is a huge jerk, to the point where it's not even funny anymore. And Tuddrussel never really sees the error of his ways in doing what he did to Otto and Sister Thornly never gets her comeuppance. I give this 3 out of 5. It's not a terrible episode, it obviously had a story it wanted to tell, but I highly suspect that because of the timing (9/11) something was taken out. If feels like something is missing, what? Oh who knows, but this episode is bitter and cruel at points because of that missing link. But on the other hand, Orphan Substitute tried to explore new territory for the show, it plays out like it was going to be serious, and in a way in succeeds. But it's just not the episode that stood for what Time Squad had eventually became to be about.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (4)

    • From Otto's orphanage scrapbook; A picture of Otto cutting sugar cane in Florida looks awfully sad on it's own. You see him sweating in the hot sun without a shirt on, terrified of a snake that's in the cane stocks. Look closely and you'll see that the snake has obviously bitten him on the arm, which you can see clearly in the form of two dots. Even more disturbing, you can see a couple of marks on his back that look real suspicious, take note that in the background, Sister Thornly is shown in silhouette holding what appears to be a whip.

    • Harking back to early 90's Saturday Night Live, a former president George H.W. Bush comes on with a Dana Carvey-esque voice saying,"Now come on, not gonna cry now. That wouldn't be prudent. It wouldn't be presidential."

    • Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory makes a cameo appearance in "Orphan Substitute."

    • Dexter's glasses are a different colour from the ones in the series.

Buck Tuddrussel: Hey! Where's the battlefield, the tanks, the screaming, the wounded. All that I see is a bunch of stupid flowers.
      Patton: (Offscreen) STUPID FLOWERS!?!?!?!?
(Fist punches Tuddrussel so hard, his head spins. Tuddrussel gets punced again and is sent flying.)

    • Tudrussel: Where's the guns? The tanks? The soldiers? All I see is a bunch of stupid flowers?
*Off screen* Patton: STUPID?!!! *Fist punches Tudressel so hard, his head spins. Tudressel gets punched again and is sent flying*

  • NOTES (3)

    • Floral Patton makes a few allusions to Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.  Such as Patton yelling phrases such as "What is your major malfunction?!"

    • Part of Floral Patton: "Patton The Head"
The part where Patton is giving his employees a speech behind an American flag is from the 1970 movie "Patton".
