Gateholm, Pembrokeshire
AIRED:

Dig By Wire

Tony Robinson and the team visit a tiny windswept island off the coast of Wales. The only way to get to it is by rigging a 500-metre zip wire way above the wave-lashed rocks. Incredibly, it seems that Gateholm Island in Pembrokeshire was once inhabited, but whether by Romans, Vikings, Celts or druids nobody knows.

A handful of mysterious objects were found on the island years ago, including a rare Roman stone phallus and a beautiful bronze stag, suggesting that it may have been some sort of religious centre. Of course, the team have to dig for answers, but the weather's throwing everything it has at them.

  • Gateholm a era name!?

    9.0
The name Gateholm can be a viking era name, Gate is English but holm(e) in Swedish means Island so if it was an Island 1000 years ago the name would mean that the Island would be like a gate to the important mainland.

    • Tony: We're on this beautiful, but extremely wild part of the Welsh coast to tackle a baffling archaeological mystery. We're going to try and uncover secrets that have remained hidden since the Dark Ages and beyond. There is only one problem - our site is over there, on that island. It's called Gateholm and it's got to be one of the most dangerous and inaccessible places we've every excavated. Incredibly, Gateholm seems to have been inhabited. Although whether it was by Celts or Vikings, or Druids, no-one knows. Who would want to set up home over there? To get over there, we've got use this zip wire. It could be the toughest Time Team we've ever attempted. Tell my wife I love her!

    • Tony: Will the archaeology be worth risking my life for? I hope so.

    • Phil: Oh, what, that is stunning! You stick that in the end of an arrow shaft or some'at like that and you've got a very very lethal projectile point. If ever we needed proof we're into the Mesolithic, this is it.

    • Tony: This morning we thought we had an early Christian settlement, but now it's looking increasing like it's Romano-British.

    • Tony: You know often by this stage on Time Team I'm getting really nervous because there are so many unresolved issues but on this island I kind of like the fact that it's so mysterious.
Raksha: I know, what's going on?
Tony: It seems that generation upon generation set up home on this exposed rocky outcrop. What drew them here?
