Kenfig, Bridgend
AIRED:

Secrets of the dunes.

Eight hundred years ago the people of Kenfig on the south coast of Wales thought they had built the perfect town, nestled round a harbour with easy access to the sea and a sheltered position.

The town appears to have been a thriving commercial success but then it vanished, leaving just a few castle walls to mark its existence.

Extraordinarily, the ruins of the complete town are believed to still lie buried under the immense sand dunes that have covered the whole site since a series of violent storms lashed the coast over 500 years ago.

But even before the storms made life untenable in Kenfig, it seems that the Welsh locals weren't too keen on its Angle-Norman settlers. There are records of a series of attacks from early in the town's life.

      • Tony: 800 years ago the people of Kenfig built what they thought was the perfect town, right here on the coast. It was a thriving commercial success - and then it vanished. Today we think the town lies somewhere buried under these immense sand-dunes. Over the next three days, we want to find out how big it was, what it looked like and how the people here fought to survive.

So will we end up with a medieval Pompeii or will we just be digging a load of sand? Might find a sandcastle!

      • Tony: Kenfig was something of a Wild West town, built slap bang on the frontier dividing Norman England from medieval Wales it was attacked and burned again, and again.

      • Francis: It would be so embarrassing if that turned out to be some geo-magnetic anomaly of some kind, you know?
John: It is a geo-magnetic anomaly.
Tony: It just happened to be called…a house.
