Slowly, oh, so slowly, the confusion clears and the picture becomes crystalline. Once again, with Joss Ackland's beautiful performance as Jerry Westerby, the underlying theme of "Tinker, Tailor" - that spies are children at play in a terrifying, adult world - is trenchantly expressed. (Jerry, who speaks incessantly in an old-fashioned minor-public-school slang, is the hero of a later John Le Carre novel actually entitled "The Honourable Schoolboy"). The fiendish cunning of the Karla-Gerald plan - so that vital information has gone out, but only minor chicken-feed has been offered in exchange - becomes finally apparent. But which one of the five senior intelligence executives is "Gerald"?moreless
