Alec Guinness was reportedly uncertain that Beryl Reid would be appropriate casting for the role of the embittered, hard-drinking Connie, because of her background in comedy. But she gave a dazzling performance and rightly won an acting award. The use of famous names in cameo parts was part of what made this mini-series so compulsive - one never knew who would turn up next, or for how long. Here, the complex, probably tortured relationship between Smiley and Connie (who calls him an "old lover") is, typically, only hinted at, yet the implications go deep. In his careful exploitation of Connie (who is not fooled), Smiley reveals a ruthless side to his nature - these are not simple, heroic characters.moreless
