This mini-series moved around quite a bit - London, the English countryside, Czechoslovakia, India and (in this episode) Portugal. It was part of the brilliance of director John Irvin that he could always place a scene exactly with the greatest economy - he never indulged in any tourist-style establishing footage, yet one was never confused about the location. This episode is mostly flashback, as the very dubious and unprincipled Ricky Tarr recounts the baffling adventure in Lisbon which has made him a fugitive; this explains to Smiley what the last, catastrophic operation planned by "Control" was really about. Hywel Bennett's superb performance as Ricky rightly dominates the proceedings - he is but little seen elswhere in the series, but he creates an indelible impression.moreless
