Gang War
AIRED:
Hooker and Romano are involved in a new neighborhood peace program designed to reduce tension in an area where two Hispanic gangs are close to declaring all-out war on each other. But the whole program and peace on the streets is jeopardized when the president of one of the gangs is gunned down in a drive-by shooting. Although the assailants are identified to be wearing the dress code of the victim's rival gang, Hooker suspects that someone else is fueling the feud to benefit from the sale of fire-arms sold to both sides of the conflict, and must work fast to find the culprits before all-out war erupts between the two gangs...moreless

Hooker & Romano attend a speech by Julie, a woman trying to bring gang violence down. They get two gang s to meet. Maria and Chuy are on the way to the meeting then Chuy is shot by gang members. Hooker and Romano roll on the call. They get backup from Stacey & Corrigan and they catch them. Hooker asks Maria if the guys did the shooting. She says she does not know. The guys say they are Primos and don't kill their own. The shooters were wearin the red bandana colors of the Ochos. Back at the station, Hooker is sure that those guys did the shooting. Hooker goes to talk to Chuy and he gets Chuy's blessing to tell his gang to talk with the other gang. Hooker asks Luis(leader of the Ochos) and Manuel(substitute leader of the Primos) to meet the next morning to talk. They both agree to talk. That night Julie is shot by two of the Primo's. Hooker believe's it's Frankie and Angel of the Primo's. They both have a connection to Julio Fuente, a gun runner and drug seller that uses gang members to move his stuff. They go to roust Julio and he doesn't let up an inch. Julio decides to rough up Maria to stir some more trouble. Hooker & Romano track down Frankie and Angel. Romano catches his man as Hooker gets his man on the roof. He puts him on the edge and demands to know who put out the hit on Julie. Ramano yells to Hooker from the groud, "Hooker, don't do it". Hooker pulls him back and takes him away. He gets a positive identification from Julie that they were the shooters. Maria is brutally attacked by Julio. She manages to grab a stud from his shirt. Hooker takes it to Chuy to show him who did it. He is too late. Chuy tells Julie he is going to make them pay. Hooker finds out the gangs are meeting at the Riverstreet Wash. He gets there in time to show them all who is to blame. They arrest Julio and his guys. Julie recovers and stays in the Bario to help out with gang violence.moreless
  • This episode was the consummate Hooker script.

"Gang War" was always one of my favorite T.J. Hooker episodes, because it captured so many of the lovably improbable aspects of the series overall.

Hooker is deeply intertwined with the Latino community.

The emotionally-driven gang leaders and members are stereotyped so strongly, you'd think you're watching an "updated" version of West Side Story.

Hooker gets a little bit "lovey-dovey" with Julie, who is half his age.

There's a car chase at the end, down in the "dry" concrete river basin that is so famous in any Los Angeles set movie or show.

And, there's the classic Shatner-delivered quote: "You're through in the barrio, Fuente. Julie and the kids -- they WIN. YOU LOSE!"

It just doesn't get any more prototypical than this episode.moreless
