Stacey has been promoted to go out in the field. Jim Corrigan is her new partner. He has an attitude problem with female cops at the moment because his last partner was killed because of a woman cop. Romano questions Hooker about Corrigan and Hooker believes he will treat her fair. They respond to a robbery where one man is killed and Fran is injured. They get one suspect and the other gut gets away. The guy meets a guy named Peter Doyle at a racetrack. He is a mechanic there and is the robbery ring leader. He wants him to get a new driver for him. He hands Doyle Fran's ring. Stacey melts Jim down a little, but he keeps his distance from her. Hooker goes to see Fran who is temporarily blind. Fran tells Hooker that the dead man at the store knew the robber. They visit the wife and his son. The son sees a sketch and recognizes him from the track. He also adds that he has a tatoo. Jim checks with his contacts from racing and Hooker checks out the tatoo. The tatoo artist says he had a french canadian accent. There is another call of a robbery and Hooker and Romano take the call with Corrigan and Sheridan as backup. Stacey ends up crashing into Hooker and Romano as Jim blows up. Hooker talks with him later and won't let him off the hook. They find out that the crooks name is Jake Hendricks. Later a pawn shop owner gets a video of Doyle trying to sell Fran's ring. They believe he is the head of the ring. They find out the jacket the guy is wearing is from the Kinston Motor Speedway. They all go to find the crooks at the Speedway. They get Doyle and find Fran's ring. He tells them they are going to do another job the next day. They narrow it down to places that will be cashing checks. They cruise the area and find them robbing an Easy Mart. They chase them to an abandoned building and chase them. Stacey throws her baton(the scene you see in the credits from Season 3) to knock down the bad guy. Hooker and Romano catch the other guy. The next day, Hooker and the others and Chrissy are there to find out that Fran can see again. Hooker, Corrigan and Romano talk about how Stacey is going to make it just fine. Another solid episode with the addition of James Darren. It starts the new direction the series would take. Fran would be moving with the kids to Oregon and Stacey and Jim would get equal screen time to Hooker and Romano. I probably like the earliest episodes best because of the stories, but seeing more of Heather Locklear makes up for that.moreless
  • Payday Pirates a turning point

    9.6
Hooker's judgment is called into question by both his partner Vince Romano and series newcomer Corporal Jim Corrigan (James Darren) when Hooker supports Stacy Sheridan's promotion to Level 3 cadet.

Fran Hooker is beaten, possibly blinded, and has her cop-given ring stolen in a robbery, but lives to tell the story to her hero ex-husband.

Officer Sheridan ditches her unheard-of uniform skirt in favor of regulation police slacks and hits the streets with Corrigan. Despite her knowledge of cars, she frustrates her new partner by ramming their cruiser into Hooker's while in pursuit of a suspect. It is learned that Corrigan is angry at all 'lady cops' due to his ex-partner's death while riding with a female officer.

The bad guys are tantalizingly inept, Hooker is tough and angry, and the episode just seems to work. 80s viewers were undoubtedly drooling at this heartstring-tugging volume of an otherwise tough-guy program.

Hooker shows a sensitive side when it comes to questioning injured Fran, and gets enough information from her to embark on the requisite hunt for 'the men who did this.' When his ex can't see the color of the red roses he brought her, all Hooker hell breaks loose, and the episode gets back to "T.J. Hooker" basics:

-Hooker gets the bad guys and makes a cool arresting statement. He also returns the stolen ring to his ex-wife

    -Romano counsels Hooker

-Veteran Corrigan begins to embrace his new partner situation

-Stacy does that cool baton toss we see in opening credits for years to come

Although we never see [this] Fran again, she is grateful that Hooker found and punished her attackers. She regains her sight and almost professes her love.

Stacy and Corrigan decide they can work together another day, Romano and Hooker are even more sure of their bond, and all Dodge-Charger-driving bad guys are put in the slammer.

In this writer's estimation, "Payday Pirates" marks an important point in this series' run. Stacy's promotion, Fran and Chrissie's extended departure, and Corrigan's entrance may mark several serious and viewer-demanded changes.
