A psychic woman named Julia Hudson has a nightmare about Hooker being shot and killed. She is called in to help with a kidnapping case. Hooker tells Ramano and crew that he does not believe in psychics. He is later seen by Julia in the precinct. She demands to work with him. He agrees to take her to one stop. They go to the victim's house. Julia has a vision of the girl holding a stuffed lamb. Hooker and Ramano find out from a snitch that Carla Bendix might have some information about the kidnapping. They think a man named Sal Ginero is involved. Hooker goes to see a blind man friend of his. He plays a violin on the street. He is loaded. He co-signs a loan for the kidnapper's family. Turns out he's not blind. Hooker talks with Carla and she denies knowing where Sal is. She gets on the phones as they leave. Hooker comes back and finds out what hotel he is staying at. They arrive and he is gone. They drive off and Julia feels that the little girl is near. Hooker shoots a guy who pulls out a gun. A truck crashes out of a wherehouse and drives away with the girl. Hooker chases it but his car is rammed and it crashes and explodes. He and Julia escape just in time. Hooker finds out that a man named Tony Orasco was a cell mate of Ginero's and he believes he may be the kidnapper. He later finds out he is right when he talks to him on the phone about a ransom drop. Julia tells Hooker that she saw him killed in her dream. Tony makes Hooker run around to a lot of places to make sure he is not followed. He takes off a wire, but he has a backup on. He is sent to a cemetary. Ramano and the other follow him there. Ramano hurries over to join Hooker. Stacey and Corrigan find the girl and Ginero in a car waiting. They arest him and take the girl. Hooker is a gunpoint inside the cemetary building. He is shot as he shoots Orasco. Ramano thinks Hooker is dead, but he still has a pulse. The next day at the hospital he tells Julis she was not right about everything that happened, he was still alive. Another great episode with the story being almost the same as my favorite episode of Starsky & Hutch. Shatner's real life wife at the time played the psychic and did a fine job.moreless

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • Hooker and Julia are parked across the street from the warehouse where the young girl is being held, when the truck comes crashing out of the warehouse and smashes into the side of the patrol car, before speeding off. When Hooker and Julia give chase, although the back window of the car is smashed, there seems to be absolutely no damage on the side where the truck hit it!

    • Romano is administering CPR to Hooker. Corrigan feels a pulse and tells Romano not to stop. Aren't you supposed to stop if the heart is beating???

  • QUOTES (1)

    • (after Hooker and the psychic escape the burning car)
Hooker: If you won't let me take you to the hospital, at least let me get you a ride home, you could use the rest.
Julia Hudson: How do you know? ESP?
      Hooker: Yeah, maybe it's catching.

  • NOTES (4)

    • German episode title: "Medium auf der Spur", meaning "Psychic on the Scent"

    • This is the first of Buck Taylor's two, unrelated appearances on T.J. Hooker. He can also be seen in season five's "Blood Sport."

    • Marcy Lafferty, William Shatner's real-life wife, had previously appeared as a different character in the second season episode "Blind Justice". She appears again, in different roles once again, in the fourth season episode "Sanctuary", and the fifth season episode "Partners In Death".

    • Much of the basis of plot for this story is recycled from (or at least, is very similar to) the second season Starsky & Hutch episode "The Psychic". In that story, a friend of Huggy Bear's has psychic visions of the whereabouts of a kidnapped teenage girl, and has Hutch desperately racing across town to reach telephone boxes to receive instructions from the kidnapper, as Hooker does in this episode. (The only key difference is that in that story, the psychic is reluctant to use his gift).
Various other series also have their own similar take on the idea. For example, The Incredible Hulk's third season episode, "The Psychic", involves a psychic (incidentally played by the wife of Bill Bixby, that show's star!) foreseeing a murder; and in the third season Airwolf episode "Fortune Teller", a woman with psychic abilities is the only key to finding the abducted Archangel.
