Hooker and Romano talk about Romano's new betting system. Hooker does not believe in it, but Romano thinks it's a sure bet. Later that night a man sets a bomb in a condemned building. It goes off and Hooker and Romano respond. Hooker meets a P.I. friend Max Silver and his daughter Linda. Max is investigating the arsons. Hooker then runs into the building to save a couple of people in the building. Max calls Hooker later and wants to meet with him. Hooker is called to a shooting at a bar and Max is found dead after a robbery. His daughter arrives at his office and the arsonist is there. He throws her to the ground and takes off. A bomb goes off, but Hooker and Romano arrive to save her. Hooker tells Linda that he thinks Max was murdered and wants to know why Max went to the bar. Back at the arsonist shop, the arsonist meets with the man who killed Max. He says it looked like a robbery, nothing more. Hooker takes a tape from a recorder Max's office to Dr. Hong to see if there was anything on it that would help. Hooker argues with Captain Sheridan about giving Max a burial with cops honors. Sheridan denies it because Max was let go from the force because of a drinking problem. Hooker and Romano go to see Betty Reed who hired Max for insurance purposes. They leave and a mna named Frank D'costa enters with the arsonist. He lets it be known that D'costa is the man taking money from the people in the condemned buildings. They decide to kill Hooker and Romano. Hooker finds out from Linda that Max had a car he thought was involved in the arsons. They track it down to a woman named Cindy Cole who works at the bar where Max was killed. Hooker and Romano both place bets on the same race. Hooker wants to prove that Romano's computer system won't work. At the bar Hooker grills Cindy. The arsonist sets a bomb on Hooker's police car. They drive away and Hooker hears a constant static sound on the car radio. He believes there is a bomb on the car. They hit the reds and race to an open area. They get out just in time. Hooker finds out that D'gosta management is involved with a lot of the buildings involved in the arsons. Hooker confronts D'costa about being involved. He denies it and tells them to leave. Later they find out from the tape they gave to Hong that Cindy Cole called Max and told him to come to the bar. Linda calls Hooker and tells him she followed Cindy's car to D'costa's building. She calls again and says he picked up Cindy and the guy who killed Max and took them to his garage. Hooker and Romano arrive as the arsonist takes off. There is a bomb set to go off and they get them out just in time. Hooker sees the guy taking off on his bike. He shoots out his tire and saves the day. The next day Stacey brings over a envelope with money from the race Hooker and Romano bet on. Romano is happy until he learns Hooker picked the winner. I really liked this episode. The arsonist was played by a very young David Caruso and he did a great job.moreless

    • (after tackling a suspect on the sand)
Hooker: We have enough litter on the beach without scumballs like you!

    • (Hooker's cruiser has just been blown up)
Romano: What the hell are you smiling about?
Hooker: We must be close! We're making someone very nervous.

    • Hooker: He's entitled to go out with a cop's honors!
Sheridan: (hands Hooker an official report) Hooker, your request went through channels. It's been denied; I'm sorry.
Hooker: Yeah. (crumples report) So am I. (throws wadded paper on Sheridan's desk) Sorry!

    • Romano: This private investigator, Max Silver, how long have you known him, Hooker?
Hooker: He was my first partner. He was the best in the business.
Romano: So why'd he retire? I mean, I'd rather be on the job than try to make it as a P.I.
Hooker: I'm sure Max would, too. He didn't have much of a choice.

    • Hooker: (being unintentionally insulting to a woman whose father has just been murdered) I know it's hard, but I've gotta ask you—think!
