  • Black Stereotype Characters...somehow it still works today!

    10
I wouldn't call this episode "racist" today, but the characters presented are certainly dated and stereotypical. The lead black police officer talks "jive" and there is a scene where Hooker has to enter an all black bar and everyone looks 'menacing". On the other hand,m the script, is Solid, well written, and the scenery is real Chicago ghetto mid 80's before any remodeling. Very interesting episode, original and well done.

Hooker is sent to Chicago to pick up a prisoner named Louie "The Finder" Felcher. He narrates in the beginning that he is there only to pick up a prisoner and leave in three hours. Hooker goes to the captain to pick up the prisoner. A cop named Sidney P. Stover walks in and starts praising Hooker and saying he is a legend. Hooker is a little overwhelmed, but he wants to know what's up. Sidney tells him that he needs to keep Louie around a few days to set up a large drug bust. Hooker asks him to do it through proper channels and Sidney says they said no. Hooker wants to leave. On the way to the airport, Sidney takes a robbery call. It involves two teenagers who robbed a store with a toy gun to get some money for a "Fix". Hooker decides to help out Sidney. Louie sets up a meeting with Steiger, the head drug man in Chicago. Sidney takes Hooker to show him all the drug houses where kids pick up the drugs. Steiger sends his runners to schools to tell the kids where to go to get the drugs. Hooker and Sidney take down that drug house and chase Steigers' runner. He catches him in a bar. Louie sets up a meet that night. Hooker and Sidney go to meet him with the money. They find Louie dead and wired. They escape, but lose the money in the explosion. Hooker now decides to go undercover as a drug dealer to pull out Steiger. He sets up a meet. They put a tracer in Hooker briefcase to follow him. Sidney is told the man Hooker busted has gotten out on bail. He races to help Hooker. The man names Hooker as a cop and they take him away to kill him. Hooker escapes as Sidney comes in to join the shootout. Hooker and Sidney evade the henchmen in a meat locker. Steiger takes off in a truck and Hooker and Sidney follow them in a truck. They finally cut them off and bust him. Hooker is now ready to leave and he is informed he has to stay for a month. He is to fill in for the sick people. Hooker's captain ok's it and Hooker is Sidney's partner again. A great change if pace with Hooker in Chicago. This is a very memorable episode from the series.moreless

    • (in a car with a jammed-open window)
Hooker: I can't feel my ear; I think its frozen. I really can't feel my ear. (sarcastic) I love your weather—rain one minute, then sunshine the next.
Det. Stover: Well, hang on three more blocks, and you might see snow.

    • Hooker: (to young robber whose friend has been killed) What's the matter with you? What are you doing robbing a liquor store with a toy gun?
Youth: My friend needed a fix.
Hooker: "A fix?" He needed a fix?! He's fixed now, isn't he? For good!

    • Hooker: So the captain calls me in Friday and says, "Congratulations, Hooker, you're a Detective. You got your gold shield back". I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. And then he says, "You're gonna go places", and I figure he's talking about my career. What he means is, I gotta go to Chicago, and pick up one Louie "The Finder" Felcher, wanted in California for fencing stolen property. Which is how I find myself in Chicago, in one of the coldest Winters in fifty years. The only thing between me and frostbite is an eight ounce, mail order raincoat I borrowed from lost & found. Tough it out, Hooker. It's three hours, and you're outta here.
