Hooker has a nightmare about his former partner, Johnny. He dreams about the day hea and Johnny responded to a bank robbery call. Hooker was shot and his partner was shot and killed. The bank robbers got away. Hooker wakes up in a sweat. His alarm goes off and Romano arrives at the door. Hooker has moved into a hotel for now and his ex-wife Fran and the kids have moved to Oregon and Hooker is down about it. At the station, Hooker discusses a ring of bank robberies that are headed to their area. The M.O. is the same as the robbers who killed his partner. They get a robbery call later that day and Hooker recognizes the leader as the man who killed his partner. He is missing one hand. Hooker shoots one of the robbers and tries to get the leaders name. He dies before he can spill the information. Hooker and Captain Sheridan argue over Hooker taking on the case again. Hooker tells him that he went back to the street because of Johnny's death and he is not going to stop until he finds his killer. He goes to see a woman he and his partner knew. Hooker helped her kick a drug habit. He asks her to meet with her old boss Freddie Hamilton. She does not want to help him. He then goes to see the girlfriend of the killer named Alma at the pier. She brushes him off. Then the killer, named Jack Clayton arrives and tries to calm her down. His other two guys show up and try to get him to leave town. He won't hear of it. Hooker woman friend calls him about Freddie anfd tells him he is at a bar. Hooker tells him he is supplying the killer with drugs and Freddie denies it. They leave and sitting at the bar are Corrigan and Stacey who are undercover. They set up a buy. They bust them and Hooker runs down Freddie. Freddie tells Hooker the man he wants is Jack Clayton. Hooker goes to see Alma one more time. She tells him they are staying at the pier. They catch one of his guys, but Clayton sees Hooker and drives away. Clayton grabs Alma as a hostage. They go to make one more robbery. Hooker saves Alma from the other guy waiting in the car and then spots Clayton across the street. He chases him into a dark building. Clayton sees Hooker coming and shoots. He shoots a reflection in the mirror and Hooker shoots him. He takes him away. Hooker helps out Alma and she will testify against Clayton. Solid episode to begin season 3. Good story and good actors guest starring. This was the first episode to show the newer, flashier opening credits. I liked the new credits because we get to see a quick clip of Heather in a bikini and then we get to see her famous dance on stage while wearing a nice skimpy outfit.moreless

  • NOTES (7)

    • German episode title: "Zweiter Anlauf", meaning "Second Attempt"

    • Marine Jahan is credited on-screen as playing a character called Evelyn West, but in the actual dialogue of the episode, she is identified as Evelyn North!

    • The closing credits, as well as having a closing version of the new revamped theme, now have a slow-motion sequence of Hooker, running from the shadows and drawing his gun, as used at the start of the new opening credits (footage which originates for the previous season's final episode, 'Lady in Blue'). (Previously, stills of shots from the episode were used behind the closing credits). This style of closing credits would remain for the rest of the show's run.

    • Fran and the children are said to now be living in Oregon.
It is said that Hooker and Fran have now been officially divorced for 9 months.
We see Hooker now living in a small, untidy apartment, in an apartment block called the 'Safari Inn'. (We hadn't seen where he was living previously, but it is indicated that he has only been living in this apartment as of recently.)

    • Richard Herd (Captain Dennis Sheridan) is now only a semi-regular in the series, and has his credit moved to in-episode, under 'Special Guest Star' credit, for each episode that he appears in.

    • James Darren (Officer Jim Corrigan) now has his name on the opening credits.

    • With this new season, a revamped version of the theme tune (very 1980s!) is used. This version would be used for the rest of the show's run.
(There were in fact several very similar, almost identical versions of this new theme tune, used until the end of the run, but to the average viewer they could easily be mistaken as the one same version).
Also with the new opening credits, a new font is used - very bold and "shiny" (again, very 1980s!)
