A man mugs a woman in her car. He comes up to her in her car with a bible. She is not interested and tries to leave. He gets in her car and mugs her. He leaves a bible behind and takes her money. Hooker arrives and realizes it's the bible mugger. A woman newswoman named Tracy Hill hounds Hooker for information and he tells her to "get that camera out of his face". Back at the precint Tracy gets Captain Sheridan to let her ride with Hooker and Romano. Hooker is not happy with the news and tries to get out of it. The captain says it's an order. Romano and Hooker are at the bar after work, Romano is pushing Hooker to get a used car from a guy named Melvin. Hooker wants to keep his old car. Tracy walks in as Romano leaves. They feel each other out. Tracy gives her opinion on Hooker's life and then he does the same to her. Hooker leaves by telling her that life as a cop is very hard and he has seen alot of cops gets killed and become alcholic because of the stress. On his way home he goes by a cop car that has responded to another mugger call. Hooker gets a description and knows he just saw him at the bus stand. He races over to catch him. He sees him and the mugger takes off. Hooker chases him(this is my second favorite chase from the series). Hooker chases him in an exciting chase with great music, into a vacated lot. He sees a cab take off right outisde and believes the mugger was in the car. Hooker gets into with the detectives on the case. They are upset he lost them and Hooker is upset they have nothing on his desciptions. Hooker and Romano continue to ride with Tracy. She asks him why he thinks the mugger is mugging people. He says most crooks steal because they hate and because it's easier to do it than get a job. Hooker gets another call where the bible mugger just hit. Then we cut to the mugger at a church where he is hiding. He is the gardener there. Hooker tracks down the man driving the cab. He was an ex-con and Hooker tells him to talk or he will make it tough for him. He says he dropped him off at a bus stand. Hooker decides to follow the route(he took the same route a while back when his car was in the shop). They run into another hit by the bible mugger. This time he would not let the victim take her pills when she got upset, she ended up dying. They find out the muggers name is named Arlen Williams. He was in an asylum for beating up women in another state. Tracy reports it on the news. Arlen calls her up for a meeting. Hooker comes by and tries to stop her from digging. She goes anyway. Arlen takes her hostage. Hooker tracks down his address and they head over to the church. When they arrive Arlen grabs Tracy and puts her on a bus with nuns. He takes off and Hooker chases him on a high wall. He then jumps onto the bus(this is my favorite chase scene of the series. I love the way he jumps on the bus and battles the mugger to get in the bus doors). Hooker battles to get inside the bus. He finally gets in and takes control of the bus and stops it. He cahses down Arlen and knocks the knife away. Tracy appologizes to Hooker at the bus and also later at the bar. Hooker tells her to not treat all cops like they are trying to steal their pension and she will be fine. She says she will try. Romano comes over to tell Hooker that his friend Melvin has a car for him. Tracy says she has a story ready on a guy who is selling stolen cars. It turns out to be Melvin! This is my second favorite episode of the entire series run. It has a great leading bad guy(Gary Frank), great humor through out & good chemistry between Hooker & Tracy. The two chase scenes are my two favorites as well. My only minor complaint is the religous fanatic angle. It has been too many times. Still my second favorite episode.moreless

  • TRIVIA (2)

    • - (14:20 minutes). TJ Hooker arrives with her car and stopped at a traffic light Mariota Avenue in Los Angeles. You can see alongside William Shatner the World Savings, now the Wells Fargo Bank ATM. Hooker then turn right and follow the police car on Riverside Drive.

    • When Hooker's personal vehicle leaves the bar, the inner filament of the left tail light is out. When he leaves the crime scene moments later to find the yellow-jacketed bad guy, it is working perfectly.

  • QUOTES (2)

    • Sheridan: Hooker.
      Hooker: Yes, sir?
Sheridan: You and Romano were supposed to be on the streets twenty minutes ago.
Hooker: Yes, sir. (looks at watch) One of Mickey's hands must be slow.

    • Romano: Hooker! I'm sittin' here pouring out a lifetime of knowledge and you're makin' light.
Hooker: "A lifetime?" My tires are older than you, Junior.

  • NOTES (3)

    • German episode title: "Eine gefährliche Falle", meaning "A Dangerous Trap"

    • The third season Starsky & Hutch episode "The Heroes" is also about a newspaper reporter assigned to accompany the detective leads of that series, who ultimately causes problems for the duo. And by coincidence or otherwise, the reporter of that story is played by Karen Carlson, who also plays the reporter in this episode.

    • Although this was the first regular episode of the series shown after the Pilot, it was in fact the second one to me made (as reflected in the production number).
