Tonight with Dave Allen (1963) is a TV series that first aired in Australia on Channel 9. However, six months into filming, the show was filming after comedian Allen got in a conflict with one of the show's producers and told the producer in no uncertain terms what he thought. Allen was immediately banned from the Australian airwaves, but as Allen's popularity grew, the ban was lifted. For his time, Allen was edgy and pushed against a number of social conventions, particularly Catholicism. He also made a habit of routinely exposing hypocrisy in the political realm. His challenges to convention, though tame by today's standards, earned him the title of Britain's most controversial comedian. In his signature style, Allen sits through most episodes center stage on a stool, smoking and sipping from a glass of ginger ale. His monologues draw from the news stories that made the top headlines in the early 1960s.
