First Run Fan Poll:
Which chef would you want to be stranded on a desert island with?
1. Elizabeth 19%
2. Graham 24%
3. Suzanne 12%
4. Wylie 45%
(all percentages are as of the end of the initial broadcast.)
Wylie: (when Elizabeth kills time by making cookies) That's going to take some time, my dear. (hopefully) Can you microwave the cookie?
Elizabeth: Not good.
Wylie: (still hoping) Deep fry? Pan sear?
Elizabeth: (giggling) Haven't tried that, yet.
Wylie: I'm good with a sauté pan!
Wylie: (after facing the Critics Table) Well, that wasn't so bad of an experience.
Elizabeth: I think we were meaner when we were Judges.
Wylie: (upon learning they must riff off the show "Lost" in the Elimination Challenge) I've never seen Lost. I'm a little lost right now!
Wylie: (counting down Graham's vending machine purchases for the Quickfire) Two candy bars, ham and cheese sandwich, and an orange juice.
Graham: And that's just lunch! Now I gotta get something for the contest.
Adam Horowitz: (about Elizabeth's yam papaya pudding) The pudding was the one part where I felt my palate was confused.
James: You were like, 'Hello, baby food?'
(Wylie is presenting his dish to the table.)
Jay: I don't want to sound needy, or anything, but I don't actually have any chicken on my plate. (Wylie looks stunned) I'm really sorry.
Wylie: They all have chicken but that one?
One of the Writers: Liz has two chickens. Liz stole yours.
(A transfer of a chicken from Elizabeth Sarnoff's plate to Jay's occurs.)
Jay: Okay, Wylie.
Wylie: Well, it was close to you. (continuing his presentation) My hope is that you'll find some sweetness, some sourness, some bitterness, and in some cases, some chicken. (he exits to laughter)
Wylie is one of only two chefs that Critic Jay Rayner had ever interacted with prior to appearing on Top Chef Masters. Unfortunately, that interaction included Wylie offering to "take it outside" after Jay referred to Wylie as being "gastronomically illiterate" in a review.
According to Kelly Choi in her blog, the vending machines were acting up terribly when the chefs were trying to make their purchases, especially for Wylie the machine would either swallow his quarters, or the arms wouldn't release enough to drop his selections. The production team's solution was to kick the machines repeatedly until the chefs got their products.
Elizabeth also made some coconut crêpes for her Elimination round dish, but unfortunately they didn't make it onto the plate.
Title: "The Lost Supper"
Tonight's episode title is a wordplay on the story of the Last Supper found in the New Testament, where Jesus eats a last meal before Judas betrays him and he's crucified.
