It seems to be about avoiding reality TV rubbish and protecting Top Gear's ratings. On the plus side, he says: "the good news is that the longer we have to make the films, the better they will be". Can't argue with that, although if they weren't wasting time with those stupid live shows, they would have time to make 'proper' Top Gear.
I'm not really convinced this is the real reason: I wonder if it has more to do with their Top Gear Live commitments? Aren't they planning to spend a few weeks in South Africa, this year?
