Episode Summary

EDIT

As they advance in years, Jeremy, James and Richard come over all nostalgic for the hot hatchbacks of their youth. To prove the pocket rockets of yesteryear were better than the present days versions, they take a Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Fiesta XR2i and a Vauxhall Nova SR1 (?!?) on a road trip that concludes at an army training ground in Wales. Expect gunfire.

Hugh Bonneville is the Star in a Reasonably Priced Car.

      • James May: 'Do you realise if Constable had lived today, he would have painted that'.

John Constable [1776 - 1837] was an English Romantic painter. He is best-know for his landscapes of Dedham Vale in Suffolk, England.

His most famous creation is The Hay Wain, which, as the title suggests, features a (hay) wain, which has become stuck in the River Stour. [A wain is a horse-drawn, four-wheeled cart used for carrying goods. In this example, it was carrying hay]. The cottage depicted in the painting still stands today and the spot where Constable painted the wain, stuck in the river, is now a tourist attraction.

Constable finished the painting in 1821. It hangs in the National Gallery, Trafalgar Square, London.
