    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Goof: Someone let Shania Twain believe it was Top of the Pops' birthday (which is in fact 1st January, not 13th September) so she appropriately wished Happy Birthday to Top of the Pops. Not only that but someone decided to broadcast it unedited too.

      • Goof: Status Quo are repeatedly announced to have been on the show 106 times. A more accurate figure would in fact be in the eighties, possibly 86 (if the official Top of the Pops website database is to be believed). This goof is echoed within the edition that holds Status Quo's next appearance in September 2005, when Fearne Cotton announced they've been on the show "Over a hundered times". Where this innacurate figure is sourced from is a mystery.

    • QUOTES (14)

      • Kylie Minogue: Hi, I'm Kylie Minogue. Congratulations, Top of the Pops, on two thousand episodes... (pauses for a second) ...about thirty of which I'm on and look absolutely dreadful. (laughing)

      • Shania Twain: Happy Birthday Top of the Pops I wanna congratulate you on your two thousandth episode.

      • Dionne Warwick: Hi this is Dionne Warwick and I wanna have my congratulations to Top of the Pops on their two thousandth edition. Goodness, that's a long time.

      • Michael Stipe: Top of the Pops! Michael Stipe from the band R.E.M. Happy anniversary, Happy two thousandth show. Please don't show the footage of me with hair down to my ass wearing the live bear suit in nineteen twenty... four? Was that when it was?

      • Pink: Hi, it's Pink, I wanna congratulate Top of the Pops on their two thousandth episode.

      • Craig David: Hi, this is Craig David and you're watchin' the two thousandth show of Top of the Pops... right here!

      • Anastacia: Hey, this is Anastacia and congratulations Top of the Pops. Two thousandth show?! Very impressive! (blows a kiss) Hope to see more!

      • Shaggy: Hey Top of the Pops! Uh, Shaggy! Happy two thousandth. (finger gestures peace) Big respec'.

      • Darius: Hi, I'm Darius. Congratulations, Top of the Pops, on your two thousandth show.

      • All of Westlife: HELLO!
Shane Filan: Well Top of the Pops, we'd like to say a very big congratulations on your two thousandth show.

      • Alicia Keys: I wanna congratulate Top of the Pops on your two thousandth. That's a lot of episodes!

      • Sting: Two thousand Top of the Pops is probably, like, forty years of broadcasting... that's an amazing achievement; major achievment... Seen Jimmy Hendrix on the show, seen The Beatles, seen the Rolling Stones... and I probably owe Top of the Pops the idea that I could become a musician or a singer... Long may it continue, let's have another two thousand shows!

      • Kelly Osbourne: Hi, I'm Kelly Osbourne. Congratulations Top of the Pops on your two thousandth show.

      • Jamie Theakston: Now today's a very special show and we have some very special messages from our pop-pals: (reading from the TOTP magazine) Beyoncé says "Happy two thousandth show Top of the Pops, you guys are Bootylicious", Britney says "Congratulations on reaching your two thousandth show" and Kylie says "Where did you get my number? Can you stop ringing me?" (looks disappointed)

    • NOTES (5)

      • Not live: This episode was pre-recorded on 12th September 2002.

      • Megamix: Oakenfold's 'Starry Eyed Surprise' is used as a backing track for a mix of snippets of many performances taken from Top of the Pops 1999 episode archive. This mostly features clips from recent years but there's the odd 1960-1990s clip thrown in including the classic Nirvana performance from 1991. We also see some of the Top of the Pops logos from different eras thrown in for good measure.

      • Visionary: In the 1000th episode, Sir Jimmy Saville wisely told us to watch this episode: "Hey, hey, hey! Now listen, listen to me carefully. I said twenty years ago that we were here to stay and I was right okay? So I'm telling you book your seats now! Book your seats now for the year 2002 for the 2000th edition of Top of the Pops and we'll still be around! ". Luckily for us, and for him, he was right.

      • 2000th Episode! This is officially the 2000th episode of Top of the Pops and many artists appear in their own message snipets to give their best wishes. Additionally the on-screen graphics were slightly altered for this edition with a transparent, three demensional number 2000 superimposed over the center of the logo.

      • No, it really is the 2000th Episode, honestly! Contrary to the number you see on this episode guide, the official 2000 figure is most likely accurate even though this appears as 2021 in this guide. There are many 1 or 2 song specials which the BBC apprently didn't believe counted towards the final total. This guide currenlty does count them but this may be changed in the future to ensure conformity to the show itself. It should also be noted that the BBC has set the record straight from the mistake made with the broadcasting of the 992nd (not counting 1 song specials) episode as the 1000th episode.
