    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (2)

      • Testing, Testing: Each presenter was given a different microphone which had, at some point, been used in the history of the show. This resulted in some presenters having really tinny voices and occasional distortion caused by the presenters unshielded breath.

      • Lights out: The show ends with Sir Jimmy turning off the power to an empty studio, shaking his head in disapproval and putting his trade mark cigar in his mouth as he walks off into the darkness.

    • QUOTES (0)

    • NOTES (5)

      • Viewing figures: 3.9 Million (21% audience share).

      • Last seen on Top of the Pops:
        Tony Blackburn - 31st December 1988
        Sarah Cawood - 28th August 2003
        Janice Long - 4th August 1988
        Mike Reid - 28th December 1989
Sir Jimmy Saville - 19th October 2001 (guest)
Pat Sharp - 21st July 1983 (third appearance)
        Dave Lee Travis - 25 October 1984

      • No expense spared: Contrary to speculation Fearne would not appear as she was in Fiji recording ITVs 'Love Island', Fearne did appear, on location in Fiji, to introduce the show with its original catchprase used for the first time since November 2003.

      • Pre-recorded: Top of the Pops did not go out as it came in - live. The show was specially recorded on Wednesday 26th July. Different endings were recorded based on who would be at number one with the correct version being inserted, along with the final Top 10 singles countdown by Edith Bowman, before broadcast on Sunday.

      • The show must go on: Top of the Pops lives on in 88 syndicated versions around the world, the spin off show 'Top of the Pops 2', the website http://www.bbc.co.uk/totp and the Top of the Pops magazine. Additionally the show has been officially confirmed as returning for a Christmas 2006 special. The current Top of the Pops studio set will continue to be used to produce output for the multinational versions of the show and the Christmas special.
