Martha Jones' initial appearances this episode are accompanied by the musical theme created for her on Doctor Who.
During the Mayfly escape segment, Martha Jones follows the security force through a gate into Section A. As the security force moves through the gate, it begins to automatically close. Martha is then seen making her move to get through the gate before it closes and locks. As she approaches and then moves through the gate, it is no longer closing.
The Gorillaz song "Feel Good Inc." is played during the scene where Owen and Martha are looking at samples.
The newspaper article ("New Mayor, New Cardiff") on the door of Torchwood's tourist shop facade is the same as the one from the Doctor Who episode "Boom Town".
Martha: God, I am so glad to see you, Jack.
Jack: See, you did come all this way to see me. It's the jaw line, once seen, always yearned for.
Jack: So do you think you can get me one of those red caps for personal use. I'm thinking Ianto might look good in it.
Gwen: Um, so, you know Jack pretty well, then?
Martha: Oh, we were only together for a few days, but it was pretty intense.
Gwen: You mean...
Martha: Oh, God, no, no! No! Not that sort of intense! No, nothing like that. (Both utter embarrassed laughs) Why, are you and him...
Gwen: No! No! Not at all!
Martha: We must be the only two people on the planet.
Gwen: I know. What are we doing wrong?
(Both laugh)
Jack: Oh come on, Martha. Be honest. You just came all this way to see me.
Martha: Still struggling to conquer your shyness, Jack?
Jack: Suddenly, in an underground mortuary on a wet night in Cardiff, I hear the song of a nightingale.
(Hub door opens and Martha steps in)
Jack: Miss Martha Jones.
Gwen: Except Barry Leonard was a student. Who would assassinate a student?
Martha: Student loans company.
Gwen: Yeah, I think you just cracked it.
Jack: Dr Jones is from UNIT.
Gwen: Oh, I'm sorry, sorry. I get a bit confused. Which one's UNIT?
Jack: Intelligence, military, cute red caps. The acceptable face of intelligence gathering on aliens. We're more ad hoc, but better looking.
Owen: So you and Jack go back a long way?
Martha: Forward and back really.
(Tosh is working at her computer, Ianto walks past)
Tosh: Ianto, what have you done with Billy Davis's body?
Ianto: Um, I was just about to dispose of it. Why?
Tosh: I thought of a way we can use him to get us into the Pharm. (Shows Ianto the computer screen, he is aghast) Clever, huh?
Ianto: Oh, you are warped on the inside. How do you think of these things?
Tosh: I'll take that as a compliment.
Martha: (Regarding Jack) So am I right in thinking that you and he...
Ianto: We dabble.
Martha: Yeah?
Ianto: Yeah.
Martha: So, what's his dabbling like?
Ianto: Innovative.
Martha: Really?
Ianto: Bordering on the avant garde.
Captain Jack: (To Owen, regarding Martha's abilities) I'd rely on Martha if the world was ending. In fact I did.

The researchers tell Martha that her blood is infused with some sort of temporal radiation. The notion of temporal radiation was first mentioned in the original Doctor Who series story "The Deadly Assassin". It has since been mentioned in the new series in the episode "Doomsday" and in the pilot episode of "The Sarah Jane Adventures".
Freema Agyeman is given the "with" credit in the opening credits.
Jack mentions he recently had a bad experience with a politician. This is most likely a reference toward the Master who posed as a high ranking politician and eventually became prime minister in Doctor Who.
The alias given to Martha (Samantha Jones) is the name of the Eighth Doctor's first companion in the Doctor Who novels published by BBC books from 1997 onwards.
Jack says to Owen, "I'd rely on her if the world was ending. In fact I did". In the final episode of Series 3 of Doctor Who, Martha Jones saved the world while Jack and the Doctor were held captive. Since time was rewound, Owen would not remember the year of despair and peril the world was actually in.
