My only real complaint is that the animation gets a bit clumsy at times but everyone has said that at this point. This was on of the major turning point for Transformers. The original movie was a huge turning point but this feels bigger for some reason. I can't recall many shows, let alone cartoons where they killed off major characters like this. The best part for me is the ending. "Optimus Prime to Autobot Fleet: return to Cybertron. That is my final For some reason that line has stayed with me, and I think it will for a long time. From what I read up on this episode, it was created because of Prime's controversial death in the original film and that this was supposed to be his very last appearance. But this episode did more than just bring back an iconic character. It proved how dark and dramatic shows could get, especially one for kids. This along with Code of Hero are two of my favorite TF episodes of all time.
I have always had mixed feelings about this episode. On one hand, it was exciting getting to see Optimus Prime "alive" after his death in TF:TM but clearly he is not the Optimus that we remember for most of this episode and, sadly, "dies" a second death at the hands of the Quintessons (though this is, of course, reversed by the events of the season finale in which he returns as his old self). Question: Did Prime remember what he did here later? Interestingly, I'm surprised that none of the other characters brought it up either. I always thought it was a bit odd that Rodimus would so quickly and so eagerly return the matrix to Optimus despite the fact that until they saw him at the Mausoleum they believed him to, of course, to be dead (what, no demands for a check up first?)- though I guess that it does make some sense as I don't believe that, based on what we saw of Rodimus during S3, I don't really believe he was willing and/or ready to assume the leadership of the Autobots following the events of TF:TM.
How they can do that to a hero? A hero like Optimus Prime? Man, when I saw this episode in my chilhood, I really get pissed off (even today, I´m still pissed off with it). The writers makes Optimus Prime return from the death, that´s cool, but he was reprogrammed to betray his friends. Can somebody tell my why has to be him? Can´t be Ironhide or Ratchet who must to die? A hero NEVER dies. At least in this episody, it´s clearly who is the best: Optimus Prime defated Rodimus even when Optimus was very damaged and lost his left arm; Optimus recover his mind, saves the Autobots and survives the attack of the Quintessons. For me, Optimus Prime is the HERO.
This episode saw the ressurection of Optimus. Well the first time he is ressurected, it seemed like the episode was the writers saying that Optimus will never come back so stop asking and I'll tell you why. This episode was about after running from an attack from the Decepticons the Autobot being forced to make a stop off in a shrine of fallen Autobots. Daniel starts seeing Optimus around and no one believes him until the Decepticons do a suprise attack and they are saved by a very damaged Optimus.
The Autobots are over joyed with the return of Optimus and Rodimus Prime gives the Matrix back to Optimus. Rodimus changes back to Hotrod but is just happy to have Optimus Prime back because everyone knows that Optimus was a better leader then he'll ever be. However all is not well for Optimus suddenly turns on them, knocking them all out easily. He makes the shrine of fallen Autobots head for a sun trapping the Autobots there and heads to Cybertron because his ressurection was a trap. He was ressurected by the Quintessons to lead all the Autobots to there deaths. Rodrod and the other Autobots escape from the shrine to stop Optimus and it all ends with Optimus comming good again and sacrificing his own life....again.
Now this episode had ended with Optimus geting shot at but the Quintessons and blown up because he flys into a sun....before he blew up he was in much worse shame then when he was seen returned in the last 2 episodes of the season.....now I could see that he could get reconstructed by Dr. Swafford but the blast would have surely distroyed him. It was obvious that Optimus was meant to die perminantly right then and there. Also this episode was have bad a good end to the show because....well it really felt like a finale.
Season three of the original Transformers takes place after 'Transformers: The movie'. In that movie we see how Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots died after a heroic battle. A real tearjerker, that moves any fan of the series.
And now he comes back as 'Optimus Zombie'. It seems one of the writers wanted a day of, and let his little nephew write an episode. Not only ruins the resurection of Optimus Prime the movie, it is also done in a blunt manner. Apparently the Quentessans (or whatever) put a few chips in Prime and he works again. Surely the Autobots would have searched the whole galaxy for a solution if they believed there was a way to bring Prime back.
Totally unoriginal, poorly executed and an insult to fans.
Oh, and why did they have to destroy the whole mausoleum? Now that I'm typing: why builing that thing somewhere in deep space and not on Cybertron or Earth? To keep it secret? Yeah right, that really worked out.
