Season 1 Episode 14

Heavy Metal War

Aired Weekdays 8:00 PM Dec 15, 1984 on ABC Family

  • Trivia

    • Goofs: When Megatron stands over the defeated Optimus Prime, his Decepticon logo is missing. Then after Optimus transformed to vehicle mode, Huffer offered to carry his trailer in an effort to conserve his leader's power until he could be repaired. But in the next shot when all the Autobots drive off, the trailer is still attached to Optimus.

    • Goofs: When Megatron first speaks to Starscream in this episode, the latter changes from his regular red color to become black-colored like Skywarp.

    • When the Autobots arrive to the battle site, all transform from vehicle to robot mode, except Ironhide, doing the reverse, before being seen in robot mode.

    • When Megatron lands from the air to discuss the terms of battle with Optimus Prime, he's briefly colored all black before changing back to white.

    • In the scene where Optimus throws a boulder at Megatron, the latter seems to teleport to avoid it, but seems to reappear at the same spot as the boulder appears to land right in front of him. Skywarp, realizing Megatron used his teleport ability, is colored red like Starscream, as the two are sitting together.

    • Devastator's face changes from scene to scene, switching from a visor to actual eyes, depending on the scene. This is a animation error that would continue throughout the series.

    • When Megatron heads to the Autobot base to challenge Optimus to the duel, Cliffjumper attacks him. In the fist shot that sees Cliffjumper leap up onto the rocks and fire, he is painted all yellow with black windows (as if the colourists thought it was Bumblebee), then when we see the reaction shot after Prime tells him to stop, he's his normal red.

    • Goof: When the Dinobots blast the Constructicons into the crevace, the blue portion of Swoop's body is colored black.

  • Quotes

    • Scrapper: There's Teletran-1! For Megatron! Destroy it!
Grimlock: No destroy Teletran-1! Dinobots destroy you!

    • Megatron: Soon, Scrapper's invention will give me the power to defeat the Autobots once and for all!
Starscream: Forgive me Megatron, but I believe your boast sounds vaguely familiar!

    • Devastator: Nothing defeats the Devastator, nothing!
Hologram Autobot: Nothing little one? Ha ha ha! What would you say about me? Ha ha ha ha ha!

    • Sludge: Sludge not see these Decepticons before.
Snarl: Not see again, either, because we dynamite them to pieces!

    • Slag: Dinobots no fool around!

    • Hook: It's no use, Scrapper. They've pulled out the heavy artilery!
Scrapper: Than we'll do the same... only heavier!

    • Devastator: Nothing can withstand the might of...the Devastator!

  • Notes

    • The Constructicons are the first combining group in the series. They are also the only group to consist of six members instead of five.

    • First and last appearance of Hound's Hologram Autobot.

    • I prefer the comic book explanation of how the Constructicons were created. In the 1985 comic #10 "The Next Best Thing To Being There!". The Constructicons were constructed from the creation matrix inside Optimus Prime's head. Shockwave later created Jetfire (Skyfire) in the same manner.

    • The Constructicons' origin would be one of the most confusing and inconsistent of the series. In "Heavy Metal War", Megatron mentions that they were built in caves on Earth. In the second season episode "The Secret fo Omega Supreme", they are shown to have existed on Cybertron and also to have been friends with Omega before Megatron converted them to the Decepticons (and it is shown that Megatron gave them the form of Devastator). Finally, in the third season's "Five Faces of Darkness", when Rodimus Prime enters the Matrix, Megatron is shown being created by the Constructicons, showing that they were evil BEFORE Megatron existed. Even more so, in the comic book, the Constructicons are shown being created by Shockwave using Optimus Prime's "Creation Matrix", and being commanded (for a time, just one issue) by Soundwave.

With all of these different origins, it's safer to accept that the Constructicons are part of Megatron's forces and to leave it at that. But, your milage may vary.

    • As would happen frequently with Devastator, he seemed invulnerable to the Autobots' weapons unless he was caught "off-guard", in which case it would only take one good shot to finish him off.

    • This episode introduces the Contructicons; Scrapper, Scavenger, Mixmaster, Long Haul, Bonecrusher, Hook, who can combine and form into the giant Devastator.
