Episode Summary

London’s relationship with trash is a tainted tale. Beginning as the Roman outpost, Londinium, in 43 AD, rapid growth, and a population explosion result in increased refuse and disease. Over 2,000 years, London’s constant struggle with trash leads to huge casualties and massive public projects that will alter the shape of the city, and the world. An Englishman invents the first toilet. Trash helps Britain win two World Wars, but pollution induced fog leads to the tragic deaths of thousands. And in today’s “throw away society,” London experiments with newer, greener ways of converting trash to energy.moreless
