“Hang Fire” sees two families fight over a satellite. In the end one of the families take over the sand steamer (B.D.N anyone?) as its up to Vash to save the day. This episode also sees the return of Millie and Meryl, who we see back in the insurance office. They are then told to go find Vash again. This is an ok episode, but it drags a bit, probably because its not as exciting as the previous episodes and there’s not many secrets revealed about our hero, which is a shame. Vash doesnt where his costume again in this episode, still wearing the clothes from the previous episode. 7 out of 10

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

FILTER BY TYPE

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • Short cut
When Vash announces he will go after the Fris family, as he says "I have to."; the scene is cut immediately to a bandit talking.

    • Buncha pervs
As the Fris family make their demands, Wolfwood gets bashed on the head multiple times by a girl as he crawled under her dress to see what's going on. Vash was mentioned as a possible dress peeker minutes ago.

    • The photo has a guy riding a beast with the captions reading:
      The 10th
      New Oregon City
      Derby
      Winner
      Max-Simon
      Xylise Poro

    • Kuroneko Sighting
On Vash's plate after Vash runs out on Wolfwood to stiff him with the check.

    • Meryl complains in her office that she hasn't quite gotten her "land legs" back to explain her recent inefficiency on the job. But it's been a few months (manga says two years) since the Fifth Moon incident. Meryl surely shouldn't be using this excuse anymore.

Meryl also mentions in this episode that she and Milly had traveled with Vash for five months.

  • QUOTES (5)

    • Worker: Holy cow! A monster idiot just crashed a sand steamer into my exalted place of work. (holding mic) I've heard of people falling asleep at the wheel, but this is ridiculous!

    • (Meryl and Milly are brushing their teeth.)
Meryl: This is a good idea. We did the right thing to splurge on a room in 2nd class.
Milly: Well the last time we rode one of these, it was full of bandits. Our whole experience was ruined.
Meryl: If we run into him in New Oregon, things are going to get real busy. Let's enjoy the peace while it lasts.
Milly: I guess that means we're going to get dragged into trouble again, huh?
(Meryl and Milly gargle when gunfire erupts. They duck.)
      Passenger: (off-camera) Bandits!
Bandit: Put your hands in the air, and mouths shut. You better not try anything funny. You understand me?
      Meryl and Milly: Uh huh.
(Meryl and Milly slowly raise their arms.)
      Meryl and Milly: Not again!!

    • (Wolfwood talks to Kuroneko as he licks Vash's empty plate.)
Wolfwood: I always had my suspicions that you were no mere mortal, but I never imagined you were actually a cat. Wait, what the hell am I saying? Where is that idiot?
      Waiter: Sir?
      Wolfwood: Oh.
Waiter: Altogether your meal comes to exactly 30 double dollars.
Wolfwood: Put it on my tab?
      Waiter: No thanks.
      Wolfwood: That rotten needle-noggin'.

    • Vash's Genocide Song
      Total slaughter, total slaughter,
      I won't leave a single man alive,
La di da di dide, Genocide,
La di da di dud, an ocean of blood,
so let's begin, the killing time.

      Bandit A: He's singing?
      Bandit B: What horrible lyrics!

    • (After hearing death threats from Fris guy announced on mike, Wolfwood takes a smoke.)
Wolfwood: (thinking) We're nothing like God. Not only do we have limited powers, we sometimes are driven to become the devil himself. (scene cuts to Vash) What's your answer this time?

  • NOTES (3)

    • Manga Corollary: Trigun Maximum Volume 1, Chapters 4-6.
The manga also had the confrontation between Polo and Fris families but it was a small tank vehicle that crashed a sand steamer. Vash does not meet up with any Polo or Fris folks beforehand. Vash sings the genocide song outside before he storms the steamer. Brad, from the next episode, is a witness to the incident. Milly and Meryl are not involved; their story was in chapter 3.

    • English Cast: Dorothy Melendrez, Jim Slane, Judy Sockey, Fred, Shannon White, Billy Regan, Matt Miller, Lia Sargent, Henry Douglas Grey, Alfred Thor, Jeff Nimoy, Richard Barnes, Johnny Yong Bosch, Jack Dallas, Remo, Jeff Stryker, Da Ud Thompson, Kenneth Dixon, Richard Plantagenet, Isa Sevilla, Eamon Starr, Chuck Farley, Heather Ashton, Natasha, Tamara Tweedy, Angie Nichols, George C. Cole

    • Original Japanese airdate: August 12, 1998.
