    Eric Northman

    9.6
Alexander Skarsgrd, known to television fans as Eric Northman, the undead owner of Fangtasia, on HBO's vampire drama True Blood, is a Swedish actor and director born into an acting family from Stockholm, Sweden. Alex made his acting debut in the 1984 award-winning drama by Allan Edwall, ke och hans vrld (ke and His World). Throughout the '80s, he worked as a child actor in movies including his portrayal of Jojjo in Hunden som log (The Dog That Smiled), which made him a teenage sensation in Sweden in 1989.

When he became a teenager, Alex didn't want to go into acting any longer and turned down further acting jobs. He decided to major in Political Science and also entered the military service as a marine. He intended to take up architecture in Stockholm but instead attended Leeds Metropolitan University in England, where he studied language. After only six months, he left the school with a Cambridge Proficiency Certificate. In 1997, he was drawn back into acting and enrolled at Marymount Theatre School in New York City for two years. He then came back to Sweden and applied what he learned as he appeared in several Scandivanian-produced films. American film-goers were first introduced to the younger Skarsgrd (as his father Stellan was already known for his roles in Good Will Hunting, Amistad, Deep Blue Sea among others) as Meekus, the dim-witted male model friend of Ben Stiller in the 2001 comedy Zoolander. In 2007, he donned his military gear as Bravo Company Sergeant Brad 'Iceman' Colbert fighting in the HBO miniseries, Generation Kill, an adaptation of Evan Wright's book about a reporter embedded in the Iraq War during its first phase in 2003. • Fiona Shaw

    Marnie [Season 4]

    8.7

Irish-born actress Fiona Shaw is one of Ireland's most enduringly successful character actors on screen, yet on the stage she is one of the finest classical actresses in the world. Her intense performances and magnificent acting skills in the theatre have won her much praise and accolades. In films, she often takes small, comic roles, usually largely insignificant to the plot.

Her extensive theatre credits include 'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie', 'Medea', 'As You Like It', 'The Taming of the Shrew', 'Elektra', 'Hedda Gabler', 'Footfalls' and the hugely controversial 'Richard II', in which she played the title role. She often collaborates with director Deborah Warner.

Film and television roles, despite being infrequent, are notable. She was arguably the best thing about 'Three Men and a Little Lady' and 'Super Mario Bros', and she made her mark in period films such as 'Persuasion' and 'Jane Eyre'. Shaw's is perhaps best known to cinema goers for her role as Aunt Petunia, the insufferable aunt of 'Harry Potter' in the blockbuster movies, a character she played to perfection in the first three films. She also appeared as Irma Prunasqualler in 'Gormenghast'.

A multiple Olivier winner, she is renowned worldwide for her unparalleled performances, and continues to play roles on stage that win her much acclaim.

While he made his film debut as a TV talk show intern in The Hotel Manor Inn (1994) and primetime debut in the 1996 CBS/Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation Harvest of Fire, Sam was initially recognized as a New York City theater actor, who made his Off-Broadway debut as a compulsive gambler on Dealer's Choice. Known to his hometown of Sydney, New South Wales as sex symbol and lifeguard Vinnie Patterson on the soap opera Home and Away, Ryan's introduction to the acting business could be attributed to "just being in the right place, at the right time". When he was 15, her mom was supposed to drop his brother to an audition in an acting agency and then bring Ryan to swimming training. After waiting in the car and fearing that he might miss his training, Ryan went inside the audition place only to be dragged into auditioning and eventually signed up as an actor. Kwanten then began appearing on television, starting with a recurring role as Ben Lloyd on the medical-themed soap, A Country Practice in 1994. He was then cast as a series regular on Channel Nine's Spellbinder: Land of the Dragon Lord in 1997. He then left the series and made his move to Los Angeles, California in 2002 to show his wares on US television. After guest appearances on The Handler and Tru Calling, he co-starred with Lori Loughlin and Zac Efron on the WB family drama Summerland, which marked Ryan's debut as a regular cast member in an American series. After the series ended, he completed the movies Flicka (2006), a family adventure drama, and Dead Silence (2007), a mystery horror. • Nelsan Ellis

    Lafayette Reynolds

    9.4
Nelsan Ellis is an American film, television, and stage actor and award-winning playwright who is best known as the effeminate yet macho Lafayette Reynolds, a short-order cook at Merlotte's diner on True Blood. He was born at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Illinois but moved to Bessemer, Alabama when he was six to live with his mom after his parents' divorce. At 14, he lived with his aunt, Pat Thompson, and near where his father, Tommy Thompson, stayed in Dolton, Illinois. He attended Thornridge High School, where his teachers Bill Kirksey and Tim Sweeney, then chair of the school's fine arts department, encouraged him to try out theater acting. Ellis was a high school athlete and had no intention of being an actor, but was persuaded by his teachers during freshman year to portray Junie, a major role, in the play The Colored Museum. Nelsan got hooked and continued towards pursuing an acting profession. After he graduated in 1997, Kirksey still supported him and would send him money at college. Ellis eventually made it to Juilliard where he wrote his award-winning play UGLy, "a story of unconditional love and how it masks a multitude of sins". Apart from theater work for more than seven years, he also appeared in a short drama film called Lost in 2002. In 2005, Nelsan made his television debut alongside Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Nixon in the made-for-TV biopic of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Warm Springs. That same year, he was cast as a series regular to play Carter Howard in the Fox crime drama The Inside, which unfortunately only aired 13 episodes. He has also made guest appearances on Veronica Mars and Without a Trace. In 2008, Ellis was called on for another series regular role as Lafayette, a flamboyant gay man who peddles V-blood on Alan Ball's gripping vampire drama True Blood.moreless

  • William Sanderson

    Sheriff Bud Dearborne [Season 1-3]

    9.2
William Sanderson was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, in the shadow of Elvis Presley. It was not unusual for Bill to see his hero in the streets of Memphis. He took to following Presley, and even managed to sneak into Graceland where he was able to listen to Elvis play a piano ballad.

William enlisted in the Army, serving two years. After his discharge he enrolled in Southern Methodist University. He later earned a BBA degree and a JD law degree from Memphis State. His interest in acting kept him from taking the bar exam.

Sanderson moved to New York and studied with acting teachers Herbert Berghof and William Hickey, whom he would call his greatest influences. He soon began landing roles in off-Broadway productions and independent films.

Sanderson's distinctive hound dog face lends itself to character acting, and he moved to Hollywood to take on small roles in films like "The Onion Field" and "Coal Miner's Daughter."

William made a name for himself playing a toymaker/genetic designer in the science fiction film, "Blade Runner." Following this, Sanderson took on a completely different type of roll, playing quirky backwoodsman "Larry" in the popular sitcom Newhart.

Sanderson has continued to make films, such as "Fletch," "City Heat," and "Gods and Generals." He took a star turn in the comedy "Stanley's Gig," opposite Faye Dunaway.

  • Deborah Ann Woll

    Jessica Hamby [Season 2+]

    9.2
Popularly known as the eternally virginal vampire Jessica Hamby on HBO's True Blood, Deborah Ann Woll is definitely making a mark as one of the finest up-and-coming actresses on television. The Brooklyn native, whose former works compose mainly of cl@ssical theater performances in New York City, has made her way into Hollywood via her guest-appearances on prime-time TV shows and her break-out role in the Alan Ball vampire drama. In mid-2009, film producers have also began taking notice of her ethereal beauty and enormous talent as she has been signed to appear in the 2010 remake of the thriller Mother's Day. Early in her childhood, it was clear that Deborah had the inclination and interest towards the arts. Throughout her grade school years, Woll was immersed in playing the piano and perfecting her skills in dance. It was only in high school that her focus turned into acting when she started being cast as lead player in school productions. After graduation, she continued her path as a stage actress by getting involved with a New York theater company which specialized in cl@ssical productions. After completing a Shakespeare-intensive course, Deborah made her way to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. She preferred USC over the schools in New York, since the students had better access to and more freedom in auditioning for film and television roles while studying. In 2007, she made her television debut as Nancy Wiscinski, a rape victim, in an episode of NBC's LA cop drama Life. She followed that up with a variety of character portrayals in other network shows such as playing a nurse on ER, a waitress on CSI, a sheltered Camdenite on My Name is Earl, and a teaching assistant on The Mentalist. In 2008, Woll landed the role of her career as she was cast as the bratty and newly-turned teenage vampire Jessica on True Blood. She was initially set to appear in at most three episodes, but the show's producers, impressed by her work, brought her back as a series regular during the second season.moreless
  • Mariana Klaveno

  • Michelle Forbes

    Maryann Forrester [Season 1-2]

    8.9
With strength of spirit that is reflected in her determined features, Michelle Forbes always knew that she would be a successful performer. At the age of 16, after receiving her formal acting training from the Performing Arts High School in Houston, Texas, she left home to head for New York to start her career. Once she had arrived in the Big Apple, she signed with the William Morris Agency and joined the Screen Actors Guild. In 1987 at the age of 22, she landed her first role on the popular soap opera "Guiding Light" where she played the complicated dual role of troubled twins Sonni and Solida. Her performance was so well received by critics and fans alike that she was nominated for a Daytime Emmy and a Soap Opera Digest Award for her effort. She remained on the cast for two years and then moved on to work on several off-Broadway plays, but it was in 1991 that Michelle would achieve a measure of mainstream fame and recognition.

The producers of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" had cast Michelle in a small role of an episode called "Half a Life". She played the daughter of a man who was rejecting his culture's long held belief that adults who reach the age of 60 should end their lives so that they would not be a burden to their families. Michelle delivered a magnificent performance in arguing a point in favour of this practice because it had been what her character had been brought up to believe in. The reaction to her appearance on the show was so overwhelmingly positive that the producers and the writers created a recurring role specifically for her. She played Ensign Ro Laren, a Starfleet officer from the fringe world of Bajor. What made her character different was that she was not a "team player". Year earlier, she had been on a mission during which she disagreed with the orders of her superiors and disobeyed them. In doing so, she inadvertently caused the deaths of several of her crewmates. She was court-martialled and sentenced to the stockade. Years later, she was recruited for a special mission to help investigate terrorist activities involving her people. Her cooperation with this mission would have secured an early release from prison.

After playing Ensign Ro in several episodes over the course of the next three seasons, she was offered one of the lead roles in a new Star Trek series called Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. She was flattered, but she declined because she did not want to be tied to the long term commitment of a television series and she wanted to play a variety of roles rather than the same one week after week. She continued to do television appearances, such as Seinfeld and The Outer Limits, but her eye had turned toward films.

She had played roles in some smaller films, but her fist major film after leaving Star Trek the Next Generation was Kalifornia where she co-starred with David Duchovny, Juliette Lewis and Brad Pitt. Michelle and David played a couple driving across the country doing research on serial killers for a book they were writing when they came across Brad and Juliette. Brad's character, Early Grace, was in fact a serial killer himself. Other movie roles followed, such as Swimming with Sharks, and Escape from L.A., but she was not getting the kind of roles or recognition that she was looking for. When she was approached by the producers of the NBC crime drama Homicide: Life on the Street in 1996 to play the role of Dr. Julianna Cox, she jumped at the opportunity, having been a huge fan of the show. After two seasons as a cast regular, her character was written out of the show. No one involved in making the decision would say why this was done, but many fans of the show site it as one of the reasons why the show was cancelled the following year. She did, however, reprise her role for Homicide: The Movie which had brought back all of the cast regulars from throughout the show's seven year run for a final farewell.

In the years that followed, Michelle had made numerous movie and television appearances, most notably on the hit Fox action/drama series 24 as presidential aide Lynne Kresge and more recently as the iron-willed Admiral Helena Cain on the Sci-Fi channel's Battlestar Galactica. While working on 24, Dennis Haysbert, who played President Palmer on the series, was thrilled to be able to work with her since he had always considered himself a "trekkie" and always thought of her as being an important part of that mythos.

Despite her desire to more work in films, Michelle has always found greater success and recognition in television. She had roles in the television shows Wonderland, The District, Alias and Prison Break. She had made an appearance in the closing episodes of the fourth season of the smash hit Lost as Karen Decker, but it is not known if she will be making regular appearances at this time.

In her personal life, she had been married to actor Ross Kettle, but the relationship ended in divorce. In recent years, she had a serious relationship with Homicide: Life on the Street co-star, Reed Diamond, but they eventually went their separate ways.moreless
