True Blood S07E01: "Jesus Gonna Be Here"

True Blood's Season 7 premiere shrunk the show's world back down to Bon Temps, and it was perfect

We’re trained to see shrinking or reduction as a bad thing, but sometimes it’s actually growth. It's what happens when a TV series crystallizes exactly what is good about itself into a pure, entertaining essence which can then be consumed as avidly and ecstatically as methamphetamines. True Blood is dealing the most concentrated form of what we love about it: humans and vampires forming an uneasy alliance in a colorful Louisiana town.

It makes me so happy that I could kiss showrunner Brian Buckner full on the lips.

Yes, I know some of you are still reeling about Tara dying. BUT DID SHE? Somehow I just can’t believe she’s gone. We didn’t actually see it happen, maybe Lettie Mae’s confused. Lettie Mae’s not exactly the most creditable of witnesses, what with her demon possession and alcoholism and child abuse and church lady tendencies and wig. That's just not the kind of wig you put over a quiet mind.

Breaking from True Blood's traditional half day/half night format, almost the entire episode took place while it was dark outside. Jessica holding the line outside the Bellefleur mansion, staring down a shadowy Hep-V vampire who wanted to drink Adeline.

It was not only very creepy, but also a chance for Jess and Adeline to process and bond, and it was also a much-needed examination of one of the more fairy-tale tropes of vampire mythology—namely, why can’t they come in unless you invite them again? That’s nuts.

We got to actually sit down with Lafayette for a spell, thank God, watching him connect (perhaps romantically?) with a handsome new vampire hippie over a bong.

And we saw almost all of Sam.

One day True Blood's editors are going to slip up and flash some Sam dick and so help me I will cancel my HBO subscription! I know this show is all about nudity (this episode hit the usual Four Titty Minimum no problem), but Sam’s dick is several inches past the bounds of good taste.

Of course, Eric’s dick is another story. We can find a seat and make a plate for Eric’s dick, no problem.

Regretfully, there was neither hide nor hair to be seen of Eric Northman, other than this hastily drawn map proffered by a Moroccan entrepreneur to Pam, who is apparently combing the world for him. Here’s the map up close for our rampant speculation in comments:

The only time I felt confined by the storyline was while watching Sookie stubbornly wandering down a long dirt road scattered with dead bodies because she was too bummed about how everyone secretly hated her to wait for an escort. This has been going on for literally years, Sookie overhearing people’s resentment; at a certain point she has to kind of get over literally caring what other people think. Also, the loss of terror would make her feel presumably MORE fragile, not less? IDK, it bothered me.

At least she openly addressed the issue by screaming about it in church:

Sookie made the point that she out of everyone knows the most about vampires, which, hmmm. Doubtless you know the most about bringing vampires to climax, Sookie, but in the realm of defending yourself from the undead, what advice do you have to offer other than “I can shoot fairy magic from my palms”? That doesn’t exactly help the average Bon Tempsienne.

Still, to be fair: How in hell is Sookie to blame for any of this anyway? That’s the real issue. The poisoning of Tru Blood by a right-wing conspiracy has led to a nationwide epidemic of hungry vampires, both sick and well, who need to eat or die. A little danger-whoring did not this mess make.

Also, a kidnapping will only spice up Holly and Arlene’s longterm arcs. I’m glad True Blood's writers finally found a use for Eric’s Death Carousel, back from when he kept Lafayette pinioned for most of Season 2.

Ultimately this slow-burn pace and these tight, stark conflicts—cooperate or go to war, actual life-or-death stakes for both humans and vampires—is a beautiful platform for a season that can have a real point of view on the larger issues True Blood has always obliquely flowed around. And I'm so grateful.

QUESTIONS:

... What happened to Tara? She’s still alive, duh, yeah?

... Countdown to Eric—next episode?

... How do you like the cozy atmosphere?

...Are you shocked by how much you now adore Andy Bellefleur?

What'd you think of True Blood's Season 7 premiere? What do you hope to see in this final season?

I liked the premiere although I cant say that I care for Sookies character anymore. After that whole Warlow thing I find it hard to feel bad for her.I thought that whole "fuck me" Jason scene was really corny but im not too mad at it after seeing Violet in the nude. I like that Pam is searching for Eric, I've always loved their relationship. And to speak on the whole Tara thing, I would like to believe that the writers have something good planned but their writing from last few seasons leave me with little hope.

Well, kinda had no idea what going on. So confusing. I probably just don't care much. But I will stand by my devotion for Andy. Always loved him, always knew he was a good person, and last couple of seasons show he is getting to be a strong and useful character.

Well, this ep was as awful as I expected it to be. :)

OK, Pam is searching in North Africa for Eric and she is given a map that he's in France (or Switzerland). Makes perfect sense that Maroccan sisha bar owner will know he's on another continent.

Well, that mixer was a bust. But then again, that happens when people trust vampires. And of course Jason is so busy kissing vampire behind that he fails to see that vampires are the problem, not the solution. At least Andy is honest, he still hates Bill (at least somebody understands vampires are in fact killing machines) but needs him to find missing people. But of course, to counter ballance it Adalind has to get cozy with Jessica. Nevermind she killed her three sisters.

Anti vampires vigilantes are (again!) bad guys. Never mind that vampires just crashed a mixer designed to protect people from vampires, killed a bunch of people and took few more. If you want to go out and actually find them but don't bow down to vampire wishes you are a dick. Leave that to the police, just ignore the fact that police is doing very little to actually find them and one deputy will alaways take vampire's side over that of the human so she gets to have sex with her. And neverind BTPD is small and feds just gave up on areas outside of big cities. Can't ahve people hunting vampires, that's very wrong.

Well, I hope Tara is dead, one annoying character less

Hey at what point exactly did Sookie and Alcide get together? What a big anti-climax after years of shipping them and be robbed of a big and passionate creshendo of emotion and sex!!!

If Tara really is dead, I think her Mom may have killed her. The last shot we had of Tara was of her throwing the Hep-Vamp onto the ground as she stood over him. There's no way he took her out. IF she's dead (and I'm really pissed at the idea that she is), then it probably happened when she went to comfort her mom. Her mom has always been selfish and skewed, and she probably staked Tara while they were holding each other on the ground. The witch probably had some messed up thought in her head like she was saving her soul or something. Maybe she even thought she had to right her own wrongs (put and end to the abomination her child had become) in order to get into Heaven. At the end of last season, my friends suspected that her mom and purposefully infected herself with Hep-V in order to infect Tara, since it was surprising for her to offer her blood for Tara to drink.

I really hope that's not the case, off screening a character like Tara is disrepectful...ontop of everything else the writers have done to her character.

If Tara did die that was a pretty crappy send off.

I don't know if Tara is actually, definitely dead, I can't imagine that they'd kill off (true death) a main character that way off-screen, but maybe we'll have flashbacks as they are wont to do.

Secondly, Eric must be holed up somewhere, besides Pam probably being able to feel when (and/or if Tara bit it) Eric was burnt, he is probably trying to heal his poor delicious burnt self.

I liked most of the cozy atmosphere just fine, Lily, thank you for asking. I was annoyed with Sookie for walking home alone and throwing her phone away, even though she's got fairy magic fingers, she's not freakin' invincible and who knows what else lurks out in the darkness ya know?

Also I was annoyed with how many people are blaming Sookie for all of this. ALL?! Seriously?! WTF? She doesn't have that much power, but that is how small-minded people react, as one commenter pointed out before. So it is human natrure. And yes, she really does need to get over, not only giving a shit what people think, but also holding it against them when they, for a second, think something negative about her. People's thoughts are complex, varied, and often ambivalent, and as a telepath, Sookie is (or should be) aware of this. But she just flips out sometimes, I suppose.

Andy is mad cool and wonderful. I have always liked him, but he is a prince.

So there was something off for me with this episode. I have built it up, anticipated it, even subscribed to HBO (seriously) just for this last season, so that I can watch it properly on the television and I watched it twice, as I usually do, but I was thrown by a couple of things: that cutie from The Originals taking the place of that other cutie at the end of last season. I really liked him, but I thought I was imagining the similarities. And wasn't there a bit of chemistry between him & Lafayette for a second? Or was that just me? The pace seemed off at some points and I don't know if that's because Stephen Moyer directed it. Perhaps they should've had someone else direct the season premiere. Or maybe it was just me. I have no life and have been pinning all (nearly) my hopes and dreams on this one thing all year.

I was tired at the end of Season 5, I was thoroughly over it at the end of Season 6, I gave it one last try and couldn't watch more than half an hour. To think the show has become ridiculous zombie vampires and people being moved around like pieces on a chess board to have long, tedious and utterly inconsequential conversations with one another. Where's the joy, the comedy, the empathy the show used to have. Where's the mystery, the chivalry, the dignity and so on. For some reason Lily loves this version of the show but I don't. I'm out.

If Tara died off camera is a stupid character treatment, if she managed to survive it sucks aswell (for putting that move on us, specially after her other-other death). I suppose Billith will use his new powers now (will he?), i think he ended like a super vampire last season now he seems like his common-vampire usual self. Eric and Pam need to be back soon and have main characters arcs. I doubt Arleene and company will survive. I can´t wait for the Lafayette/Jessica catfight to start ...that would be epic. Andy has grew on me like a fungus...he´s all awesome now. Sookie won´t die sadly but i only hope to see little of her. I also hope for Mrs Fortenberry to die in the most slow horrible manner ( what a horrible woman). I´m sure Eric & Pam wouldnt be exactly ammused of seeing Fangtasia all infested of H-vampires. I only hope for Lafayette´s happiness this season. I´m sorry you don´t happen to dig Sam´s peepee but i love him he´s one of the best characters ( he s super gorgeous and i would never say no to that shifter peepee) and i also hope he gets the happy ending he deserves too. Sookie will survive i know...but one can dream she will die in the same stupid manner how her name sounds. I hope Alcide hooks up with Sam and they end like the first supernatural gay married couple of Bon Temps ( i know the sex will be wild ) :)

Eh, to me this first episode was kinda boring, actually.

Only one thing: Jessica's boyfriend, that scorted Laffayette home, was he already in True Blood last season? I don't remember him. I remember that Jessica hooked up with a vampire back in Vamp Camp, but he looked very different.

they recasted him bc the original actor left the show due to "creative differences" -- basically he didn't like the script and where the character was going....
Reply
Flag
Thanks! Now I wonder why he didn't like where the character was going... Maybe it's about a romance with Laffayette?

Yes, there was an article I saw today that said Luke Grimes didn't want to do the gay scenes with Lafayette so he quit the show.

Man that's too bad, not only was he super cute, but he & Jess had great chemistry as well. The new guy is a cutie too, don't get me wrong, it's just that what with him also being on The Originals, it's a bit strange and threw me for a minute.

So here is my prediction for the ending of True Blood. Sookie somehow uses her fairy power to go back in time and stop all of this from happening, probably at the sacrifice of herself. Lafeyette gets a happy ending, maybe with his boyfriend, Jesus, from season (4?), his body did go missing.

I don't believe Tara is dead, not until Pam reacts.

A shockingly quick and off-screen disposal of Tara. Makes me fear that they are going to bring her back as some silly ghost or some such. If somehow they don't, then I hope Lettie Mae follows in her daughter's footsteps.
Ironically, none of the characters grieving for Tara struck me as overly genuine. I know, they were supposed to be, but it just didn't carry across the screen too well.

Of course there had to be a predictable issue thrown at Sookie & Alcide's reliatonship early on. And then some fan service offered to Jason.
Can't say that I care much about the kindappings, because if the show were to follow the habits it established for its feral vamps, the imprisoned humans wouldn't survive any long at all. I mean, all it took was one stray vamper to make it down to the basement and pick its victim on a whim. And there are many of them.

I think I liked the interactions between Jessica and the only Bellefleur daughter the most. The young fairie is as pure as it gets. The question is whether she can stay this way in that world.

Huh, turns out, i still only care about Jessica on this show. We know Bill was under orders from the queen not to harm Sookie way back, but still It takes lotsa restraint to avoid Fairie blood. It took Jessica 3 dead siblings to learn resisting the 4th one.

That was some tension between her and Adeline before she stopped herself. Phew. And to think Jes' boyfriend was called "Faggot" in his old neighborhood, it's gonna stir things up :D

Hmm, whenever a major character dies, I immediately go to see if the actors in question have other projects to do. Rutina Wesley does have 2 movies this year, so who knows. Besides this, I thought it was business as usual. Like it was never gone. Glad to have it back, even if it's for just 1 season.

I don't for a second believe Tara's dead, atleast not yet.. any time a main character dies, I don't think they'd do it off camera. that only works if the actual actor has died in real life. killing off a character only has an impact if it's shown and this wasn't shown. could've just hyper-fought and the guy got staked and she ran off and her mom didn't realize.

the whole blaming Sookie stuff really got on my nerves, how is she in any way the one to blame for this? vampires didn't just come out of the closet, or coffin rather, just to bang her any which way.. so I seriously doubt she had too much of an influence on how this ended up when it was government crap.

the new hippie vampire isn't actually new, Luke Grimes left and they recast the role with Nathan Parsons, but it's still James. kind of funny that Nathan Parsons plays a vampire on True Blood now but he's also a werewolf on The Originals. just make him a witch on Witches of East End (what? it's the only current magical show I can think of, unless Teen Wolf wants to add witches) and he'll have the fantasy role trifecta.

I doubt Tara is actually dead, as well. But given how many times we have watched poor Tara almost meet death and then escape at the very last second, it would be a delightful bit of irony if her actual death happened off-screen. Nonetheless, I think she's going to turn up again. She better still be alive. I heart Tara BIG TIME!

I am indeed shocked about how cool Andy has become :) Nooo, Tara cannot possibly be dead. And she will reappear when we expect it the least... maybe like Eric? I'm also happy to be back to the original small town. It's funny how now Sookie seems to be the least important of all characters... maybe it is just me, don't mind me :)

1. Oh gawd, I hope not. Please stay dead, Tara. (Unfortunately, I don't think she will)
2. Oh gawd, I hope so. Please come back, Eric.
3. Hmmm. The atmosphere was fine. I like them getting back to fundamentals but overall, if I'm honest I was a bit bored.
4. Nope. He was pretty great for a lot of last season too, so I was prepared.

Also - I love Pam. That's not immediately relevant, I just can't comment on a True Blood post without saying it.

The rules:

If you don't see them die, they're not dead.

If you see boobs in the first episode of the series, you will have to wait to untill the last episodes to see them again.

No matter where they start, everyone ends up in Bon Ton.

Wouldn't Pam feel it if Tara actually died? I'm not totally clear on the specifics, but she felt it when Tara was about to off herself in the tanning bed, so one would think she'd react to that no matter if she's off in Morocco. Also I cannot believe that any show runner with half a brain would kill a main character off screen and in such a non showy way in the beginning of a season premiere. That's just not done.

those scenes did not have to happen EXACTLY at the same moment in time. I did think that was too subtle too but looking back at that scene she was quite angry and it does not necessarily have to all do with Eric running away. I'd think she'd rather be angry than breakdown and cry -- remember her happy face and mad face are the same. :)

The episode wasn't that bad! Not awesome, but not boring either (in my opinion).

1: Pretty sure Tara is NOT dead. Vampire rule no 1: If we don't see them die, they're not dead. If we see them die, they probably wont stay dead. ;P Maybe she just glamoured her mom so she THINKS her daughter would be dead and that she'd tell all the other guys. I think Tara has her own undercover-mission to help, and best way that no one comes into your way and stops you is to let them think you're dead. ;)

2: YES! I called my spirits Lafayette-like and they were screaming "YES-FUCKING-WAY!" :D

3: Better starting with a cozy atmosphere and rise to full rage and brouhaha, than to start high and fall deep.^^

4: YES, I'm very shocked, but already for a few seasons now. At the beginning of the series I HATED Andy, but by now it has gotten really hard to hate him...

5: Of all the characters I was most excited to see 'Lady Gofuckyourself' again! And I wasn't disappointed! *o*

6: I know, Jessica and Adilyn are straight, BUT FOR HOW LONG?!?! :D I SHIP THEM!!!

Rutina was quoted in an interview when asked if Tara was dead, she said "yes" she's dead. And I thought who interviewed her, someone who doesn't watch the show. All vampires are dead technically. The question should've been was Tara eviscerated from existence. I maybe in the minority but I loved the Tara character and was kind of pissed at the lack of reaction of the majority of the players in her life, but then I thought.....Tara was always an afterthought. Tara was always rude, crass and jerk half of the time, but Tara would go to the end of the world for most of them, they wouldn't for her. In fact Jason, was about the only one that part way showed Tara concern. Doubt we've seen the last of Tara though.

well generally people always try and naturally find a escape goat..

Sookie is known for being with vamps so the towns small quick to judge minds would blame all on sookie with no logical explanation this is normal human behavour.. i think the writers were spot on with this episode..

i really enjoyed it. cant wait for next week. is it me or did it feel like forever for this season to come out and is there new actors here or i forget some things ?

I don't even like Tara, but that was a pretty shitty way to be written off. Seriously, you're just going to kill a main character OFF SCREEN like she's nothing? That's Dexter-finale level crappy writing there. I feel bad for Rutina Wesley.

That was ridiculous - if they were going to kill her off they should've let her die before not kill her off-screen in the premier episide? It really makes it look like the writers have no idea what they are doing. They probably thought they pulling off a George R Martin by killing off a main character unexpectedly. They weren't and they didn't. His character deaths maybe unexpected but they never feel unplanned.

I don’t think Tara died. Pam would have felt it. I think what could of happen. Tara throw the guy to ground she could of killed him
and it did not show that part. Tara’s mom screaming like a idiot did not pay attention and then maybe a vampire dragged her off somewhere just like everyone else. and Tara’s mom holding the dead vampire guys bloody goo thinking it’s her baby. That’s funny it did not show her get killed off. think about it. Lettie Mae don’t know her baby Tara.

I was really afraid to watch the premiere cuz True Blood has been letting me down for the last 2 seasons, if I didn't adore Eric, Pam & Lafayete that much I would have probably stopped.

The we all hate Sookie cuz it's her fault thing was just plain stupid. And her saying in part that it is, is even worse. Yes I liked that she yelled at them in church, something that should of happened years ago.

Tara I have been tired of her since before she became a lesbian kick boxer or whatever & they should of killed her then, so her death would have impact. Now I felt nothing, ABSOLUTELY nothing.

The Jessica boyfriend recast was a good one & I loved his scene with Lafayete. When Arleen & the girls all screamed at once in the basement I was laughing so hard. Also Pam was great, but she always is. Violet is fun, and Jessica watching fairy teen good.

Make a plate for Eric's dick I so agree. Lily I always love your reviews even if I agree or don't agree with you (and u do Reign so that makes u double great)
I think the map is where Eric is from so that's why Pam says he would never return.

I was laughing so hard too when the girls were screaming! :D Reminded me of Ginger. Good times back then.... Well, not so good for the enslaved humans, but the vampire talks were always great!

But your last part doesn't really fit to Eric's past. Eric is from Scandinavia and was turned into a vampire there, IF I remember correctly. Rhône is southern France. I thought about his time during WW II, when he fought against the Nazis, but that was in Germany... So I'm pretty sure we are going to see a new side of mysterious Eric Northman's past this season... :D

I don't mind the limitation to Bon Temps at all: in fact TB needs all the limits it needs, particularly it needs to limit a number of characters ASAP (instead of introducing bunches of new players AGAIN – I'm looking at you red-necky anti-vamp movement).
All in all though, I must say I was a little disappointed with this premiere. Don't know, I guess after how neatly season 6 cleaned old messes, I expected more.

I think it would be great that if Tara were dead, that her mom is a medium or whatever LaLa is/was and she starts seeing her. I don't understand why they blame Sookie, because it's not like she invited Bill to move into town, he wasn't the only one. There were the nesters who had came also. Don't the townspeople realize that the HepV vamps are different from the non-HepV vamps? That was irritating me. I like the pastor and hope he doesn't die too soon. I would like to know exactly how Sam became mayor. Also, who is the whistler? I hope is it Sarah Newlin. But it's probably someone new.

WoooHooo they killed off Tara, (hopefully). She makes no sense in the world and was basically a horrible character as a vampire. And they got rid of Tan vampire, so that is two corrections to two very large and annoying mistakes. I might just watch the whole season in gratitude for that. Thank goodness. Now if they could just kill off Sookie then the show would be great.

The rest of the show was all right. The whole hep v thing is kind of boring, but they kidnapped some semi not so much important people so there is that.

Jessica is still awesome, Violet is all kinds of awesome. And the rest is all right. Not too many things to complain about other than the silly humans that were running around everywhere trying to act tough. I kind of wanted Violet to use that girls head as a goblet. That would have been cool.

But as of now, Tara, dead or not is off the screen and it is great.

You were begging for her death all last season, so I know you'd dig it the most. However, I do have a concern. I've been reading that there are supposed to be some flashbacks involving Tara, so she may be dead, but they may somehow keep her alive through flashbacks, which is stupid. I'm not 100% sure about this, but it could be true.

As for the episode, I agree with what you said. I also loved Pam's line about God.

"Your God and my God can go to a motel and have a circle jerk for all I care. I’ll be in Hell having a three-way with the devil.”

She's always been anti-religion, so I'm glad they somewhat kept with that. I'm also kind of glad she didn't eat the little girl. Still, I hope they address why she didn't feel anything when Tara died. Maybe she did?

Well the flashbacks would likely be from when she was human and she was a better character when she was human. So that is a benefit. But I agree in a finale season there shouldn't be time wasted with Flashbacks of mediocre characters. But I suppose it could be worse. It could be ghost Tara.

And yea, that quote from Pam was fantastic.

According to IMDB, and several other internet interviews, Tara is credited for every episode of S7, which made me die a little inside. However, if she is present in small doses of flashbacks, I can deal. If she takes over Lafayette I am so done with this show!

Oh god I didn't even think about that. She could be channeled by Lafayette, who I actually liked on this episode. I loved how he said he relieved instead of sad, because he already mourned once, not doing it again.
