Finally, a quality episode of True Blood this season. You had a lot of action, a big sequence involving way too many cast members, it was really all of the elements you expected from the show back in the day.
  • Assault on Fangtasia (Spoilers Ahead)

    8.5
True Blood continued its newfound winning streak of awesome and closed up the captured friends story arc of the season. I was glad to see the Pam/Eric and Bill/Sookie storylines converge so quickly when only one episode ago they were so separate. Sookie helps the newly rescued Holly remember where they were before (since they glamored her into forgetting). Bill gets a bunch of other clean vamps to help them attack Fangtasia (like four) but we get a great bit of vamp and H-vamp effect combat in this episode which was delightful. Throw in a bigoted and enraged widow (Deputy Kevin's wife) joined by Mayor Wannabe and a bunch of others and a bloodbath ensues.

The flashbacks of this particular episode weren't as out of nowhere as last week's were but it was great to see a returning Magister (Zeljko Ivanek) laying down the law for the new Sheriff of Area 5 and his protege and their shabby video store (with a basement pornography section no less). Throw in more late 80's Eric and a first time appearance by Ginger who gets to work the day shift at the store and we're cooking with fire. The whole Fangtasia name being her idea was a little on the nose but Pam glamoring Ginger into thinking it was her idea, and her telling Eric as such, was so thoroughly Pam it was hard not to laugh at that. Seeing Eric in a weakened state is hard to watch especially with his somber heart to heart with Sookie about his upcoming death. He can't even punch through a wall in three tries while Bill is able to do it in one go. I have and always do enjoy Eric and Bill's banter, "Pam tells me you wrote a book claiming you're not an a**hole anymore," or when Bill saves him from a staking, "See. Now an a**hole Pam remains as entertaining as ever too as she even tells Bill how his heroism to get Sookie back "ain't But Eric's whole proclaimed reason for being in Louisiana and not hunting down Sarah Newlin in California, to get Willa, was upturned as he merely got absorbed into the rescue storyline to no doubt have others from the vampire ensemble join him on his crusade against Newlin and the Yakonomo Corporation (I apologize for misspelling it Yakomono Corporation last week) since with Arlene and the rest saved there is no more to be done with Fangtasia and Shreveport at this point. There was also some boring Lafayette/Jessica not feeding storylines here but I glossed over them for the sake of streamlining this review. I'm sure if they can keep the dark humor and the momentum going we can get a great latter half out of this season that gives it the proper send off it deserves after so many years of meandering blandness.moreless
