One day after HBO's True Detective earned several Emmy nominations, including nods for both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, multiple media outlets are reporting that Irish actor Colin Farrell is in talks to star in Season 2. HBO executives weren't willing to spill any casting information yesterday during their panel at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, but they did say the cast would probably include some familiar faces. You will, of course, recognize Farrell from his critically acclaimed work in Daredevil, Miami Vice, and his sex tape.
... MTV has renewed its hit reality series Catfish for Season 4, which should at the very least make our own Cory Barker very happy. The network also announced a handful of premiere dates for returning show: Awkward. is back for Season 4B on September 23 at 10pm, Faking It is back for Season 2 on September 23 at 10:30pm, and Are You The One? is back for Season 2 on September 29 at 10pm). New series Happyland, a teen dramedy exploring the underbelly of a popular theme park, will debut Tuesday, September 30 at 11pm. [MTV via press release]
... MTV also announced a straight-to-series, 10-episode order for Shannara, a new drama based on the series of books by Terry Brooks. The first season will be based on The Elfstones of Shannara, the second title in the series. Smallville producers Al Gough and Miles Millar are on board to write and produce. [MTV via press release]
... Starz is making the premiere of its new drama Outlander available online one week before it officially premieres on August 9. Starting August 2, fans will be able to check it out on Starz.com, the Starz Play app, YouTube, Facebook, and more. The premium cable network is also splitting the first season in two like it's AMC or something; the first eight episodes will run uninterrupted through September 27, with the second half of the season debuting in early 2015. ... Starz has also announced premiere dates for two new series, The Chair and Survivor's Remorse. The Chair is a 10-part documentary from Chris Moore (Project Greenlight) that follows two first-time directors who are going through the process of bringing their debut feature to the big screen; it'll debut Saturday, September 6 at 11pm when everyone's either out or asleep. Survivor's Remorse, a half-hour comedy from executive producers LeBron James (seriously), Mike O'Malley, Maverick Carter, and Tom Werner, follows a young man who's made it big playing basketball (and yes, the original script had the show set in Cleveland). Look for its debut on on Saturday, October 4 at 9pm. [Starz via press release]
... Josh Charles is returning to The Good Wife... as a director. The actor, who was nominated for an Emmy for his performance in Season 5, will direct his fourth episode of the series in Season 6. Charles previously helmed "The Art of War," "The Next Month," and "Tying the Knot." [TV Line]
... Luke Mitchell has a new job and it's not on The CW (that sound you hear is me crying buckets for The Flash). The former star of The Tomorrow People has joined the cast of ABC's Members Only, previously known as The Club. Described as an upstairs/downstairs soap opera set at a country club, Mitchell will play new employee Jesse, who hails from the wrong side of town. [THR]
... Gabrielle Walsh has joined the cast of The Vampire Diaries. She'll first appear in the Season 6 premiere as Sarah, a newcomer to Mystic Falls who has a shady agenda. A shady agenda? I am SHOCKED. [Deadline]
... Hung's Thomas Jane has joined the cast of Syfy's The Expanse, the network's upcoming adaptation of the Leviathan Wakes book series from James S. A. Corey (a.k.a. collaborators Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck, who write under that pen name). It's a space opera set 200 years in the future, and it centers on a detective and a rogue ship's captain as they race across the solar system in search of a missing young woman... with the potential to expose "the greatest conspiracy in human history."
