Truly American

Show Summary

"Truly American is an educational series that originally aired on PBS in 1974. It consists of 32 twenty-minute episodes and is suitable for use in an American history class from 5th through 10th grade. Each episode provides a biography of one or two Americans using recreations and archival footage. Many of these Americans will already be familiar to the students, although not all of them are famous. The first episode covers the lives of Benjamin Franklin and Benjamin Banneker. Franklin is well-known as a printer, scientist and politician. Banneker was a free African-American who lived in the eighteenth century and was an almanac author, astronomer and surveyor. The next episode is about Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson, the third and seventh United States presidents respectively. The third episode in this series deals with James and Dolly Madison, the fourth U.S. president and his wife. Eddy Halas is the host and Bob Halas is the narrator for this series."
