  • 'There are no winners in war. Some just lose more than others' Gen. Savage (Robert Lansing)commenting on having to kill his dueling captor, Oberst Richter.

That memorable quote from the epilogue to this pivotal episode clearly articulated a "truth" which in my adolescence escaped me; but which now, with the season of years, I am finally beginning to grasp. In the second season opener, the character of General Frank Savage discovers that truth, paying the ultimate price by losing all, namely his own life.

As an aside, I found Robert Lansing's portrayal of the man to be more seasoned and immenently believable than the fledgling Colonel Gallager who took over as Group Commander. Later on in the series, the writers very ably "fleshed out" his role.moreless
