This tells the real story of what it's like to

be a pilot in war: accidents, miscues and misery.

The 918th encounters a straggler B-17 and lets it

join the squadron.Unbeknownst to the 918th,it is

a plane full of Germans, and General Savage's plane

is shot down. One survivor does survive:

    Sgt.Komansky,the flight engineer.Lt.Col.Gallagher

takes over temporary command of the 918th until

General Britt can find someone to command, and

Gallagher isn't confident he can do the job.

To illustrate things, his plane shoots down a

    straggler that wouldn't give identification.

    Unfortunately,it was an American B-17.Now

Gallagher is ready to quit.He gets drunk as he

talks with General Britt. He encounters the

    female intelligence agent,but Sgt.Komansky

arrives and jumps to the conclusion that Gallagher

took his date and, angry,Gallagher grabs Komansky

by the lapels. He threatens Gallagher with

assault charges, but in the end, after Gallagher

and Komansky fly a successful mission in which

the German B-17 is shot down,Komansky withdraws

    the assault charge.Gallagher,after a stormy

session with General Britt, promotes Galklagher to

full Colonel and gives Gallagher command of the

    918th.

    A very good episode.moreless
