Although no exact date is given, Edwina Lewis is sent back 20 years into the past.
Judge Othniel: Mrs. Lewis, with such compassion for others, with the, the good fortune of having a good fortune, why didn't you and your husband ever have any children?
Mrs. Lewis: Well, we were going to, but there was always so much to do.
Judge Othniel: Then, you must have no regrets.
Mrs. Lewis: None. (sees a video clip from her life) Except one.
Judge Othniel: Which would be?
Mrs. Lewis: That I never had the affair with Hugh when I had the chance.
Mr. Jones: HAH! And a sense of humour! Did I mention that? She is also very, very funny! HA! HA! HA!
Mrs. Lewis: Well, I, I know this must sound SO sinful, but Hugh and I, well we have something - we had something special between us.
Judge Othniel: I see.
Mrs. Lewis: From the time we met, I wondered if he was the one I should be with.
Mr. Jones: Ah. Oh.
Mrs. Lewis: And I think he felt the same way about me.
Judge Othniel: I, I, I find that very interesting.
Mr. Jones: Interesting?
Judge Othniel: Yes. Yes. Here she was leading a perfect and good life and yet all the while she may have missed the only opportunity to be with the true love of her life.
Mrs. Lewis: So you do understand.
Judge Othniel: I certainly do. And I am very sympathetic.
Mr. Jones: Well, then you didn't understand.
Judge Othniel: Which is why I'm giving you a life sentence.
Mr. Jones: What?! To go back?
Judge Othniel: Yes.
Mr. Jones: No!
Mrs. Lewis: I'm confused.
Judge Othniel: I'm giving you an opportunity to return with your memories intact and experience being with the true love of your life.
Mrs. Lewis: I didn't even know you could do that.
Mr. Jones: Your Honor, I'm not sure you realize the full ramifications of your decision.
Judge Othniel: Jonesey, are you questioning my judiciousness?
Mr. Jones: No! No. No. I mean, I'm just not sure if I introduced her properly. I said MRS Edwina Lewis.
Judge Othniel: I heard that.
Mr. Jones: Then maybe you're not aware that her husband's name is Barry, not Hugh.
Judge Othniel: I got all that!
Mr. Jones: You got... Oh, I see, then it's me who misunderstood. Phew. Thank you. I thought because, sorry, for a second there I thought I heard you say you were giving her a life sentence. But what you said was you were giving her a, a
Judge Othniel: A life sentence.
Mr. Jones: What? Has anybody read The Scarlet Letter?
Judge Othniel: You have three days, and three days only. No one will recognize you. You will return with all your memories intact. You are a free agent in the universe with the blessing of God Almighty and His court. (raises his gavel)
Mr. Jones: Yoo hoo, may I just add that she is talking about adultery?
Judge Othniel: Go! (bangs his gavel)
Young Mrs. Lewis: Where have you cooked before?
Mr. Jones: Me? The last event I cooked for was supper for 13 men.
Young Mrs. Lewis: A roast?
Mr. Jones: No, they were all vegetarians.
Young Mrs. Lewis: I'm sure it was a big success.
Mr. Jones: (to himself and the returned Mrs. Lewis) It also ended with a betrayal.
The Thomas Crown Affair
Refers to Norman Jewison's 1968 film starring Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. The plot centers around Thomas Crown, a young, handsome millionaire who steals $2.6 million from a bank. Vicki Anderson is an independent insurance investigator who is hired to investigate the robbery and in the process ends up having an affair with Crown.
A remake of the film directed by John McTiernan was released in 1999. It stars Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.
Doctors Without Borders
Officially knows as Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Doctors Without Borders is a non-religious, non-governmental humanitarian aid organization best known for its projects in war-torn regions and developing countries facing endemic disease.
The group was created in 1971 by a small group of French physicians who believed that everyone regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation has the right to medical care, and that their needs supersede respect for national borders.
MSF received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts in providing medical care in acute crises and in raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters.
Mr. Jones: The last event I cooked for was supper for 13 men.
This is a reference to the Last Supper, the Biblical account of the last meal Jesus shared with his 12 Apostles before his death. The story is told, in sightly different versions, in each of the four Gospels and ends with Judas betraying Jesus later that night.
Mr Jones: Has anybody read The Scarlet Letter?
The Scarlet Letter is an American romance novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in 1850. The novel, which is set in 17th century Puritan Boston, tells the story of a woman who gives birth after committing adultery. She refuses to name the father and struggles to create a new life.
