I actually have the Gold Box set, but from what I've read the season 1 DVD set did not include the pilot episode/movie. So, episode 1 is technically the second episode in the series if you count the pilot as an episode.

Precisely. The order of episodes is: Pilot, Episode 1, Episode 2, etc. The season one DVD set starts with Episode 1, so the "previously" scenes are from the Pilot.

You can find the pilot alone on an imported DVD with questionable legal standing. It's not for sale on Amazon any more, but might show up there as a used DVD and can usually be found on Ebay.

The best solution, though, is to get the Gold Box set. That has every episode including the pilot and a lot more special features.
