    I just read that Sheryl Lee (Laura Palmer) originally played the part of Mary Alice Scott (now changed to Mary Alice Young) in an unaired pilot of Desperate Housewives. They changed a few of the actors and then reshot the pilot. Sheryl Lee was obviously one of the ones recast. It's interesting because as in Twin Peaks, she would have played a role where she's dead in the first episode, and then is shown in flashbacks throughout the series. Perhaps that's one of the reasons they cast her to begin with.

    I have heard this too.  I also saw a promo shot of her on the set (the ones where the cast are sitting on the porch outside one of the houses).

    No idea why she was recast as I think it would have been good.

    That is fascinating, although in hindsight, I think they made the right choice after all. The actress that actually plays the part has a fitting matronliness about her that I don't think Sheryl could have brought to the part.

    I think it's interesting that the actress that replaced her was on Twin Peaks.
