Season 1 Episode 22

Kevin Burke's Day Off

Aired Unknown Jul 09, 1999 on ABC

  • Trivia

    • This is the first Cubs home game of the season, you can see that the ivy on the back wall of Wrigley Field is green. The ivy is never green like that during the first two months, at least, of the season.

  • Quotes

    • Kevin: (when Carrie is skipping his class) You're just lucky I'm not planning a pop quiz......or am I?
Carrie: Well, I'll just have to take your class again next semester.
Kevin: (pauses) Okay, no pop quiz.

    • Kevin: Sounds like you did the right thing. You know, normally, I'd ask for details, but it sounds like you have everything under control.
Ashley: Yeah, I do... oh, by the way, I need $60 to buy Gabrielle a new backpack.
Kevin: Okay, now I need details!

    • Gabrielle: Oh, no, that's my backpack!
      Mary-Kate: Oh, man, that sucks!
Gabrielle: I just got this for my birthday--I don't believe it.
      Mary-Kate: I'm sorry, Gabrielle.
Gabrielle: I mean, it's hard enough starting over at a new school, but why would somebody do this?
Mary-Kate: Well, there are a lot of jerks at this school.
Gabrielle: I thought it would be different here... but it's just another school where everybody hates me.

    • Courtney: Oh, wow, Gabrielle, look what happened to your backpack. Gee, that's really too bad. See you at tryouts, Ashley.
      Ashley: No, you won't.
Courtney: What's that supposed to mean?
Ashley: I really wanted to be a cheerleader, but not this bad. I'm really sorry, Gabrielle. You're right, you didn't deserve this.
Courtney: You're making a big mistake, Ashley.
Ashley: I already made the mistake.

    • Kevin: You're right. I little more fun in my life wouldn't kill me.
Carrie: Great. So do you want to try skydiving?
Kevin: No. See, that might kill me.

    • Carrie: Kevin, even the President takes off the first day of baseball season.
Kevin: Yeah, well, the President does a lot of things I don't do.

    • Courtney: (To Jennifer & Ashley) Well, as captain of the squad, I've had my eye on you two. Good fashion sense, decent hair, semi-popular. You just might be cheerleader material.
Ashley: Wow, coming from you, that's quite a compliment.
      Courtney: I know.

    • Jennifer: Courtney, your hair looked really amazing today.
      Courtney: As opposed to... when?
Jennifer: Uh, as opposed to yesterday when it looked merely fabulous.

    • Ashley: Jennifer, I just thought of something. What if only one of us makes the cheerleading squad tomorrow? Wouldn't that be awful?
Jennifer: That would be the worst. But you could still come and watch me.

    • Carrie: Don't you want to do something spontaneous one time? Just for the fun of it?
Kevin: The last spontaneous thing I did was hire you. And I'm still waiting for the fun to start.

    • Carrie: You never step outside the box, do you?
Kevin: I do, too. What does that mean?

    • Carrie: Come on, you recognize him. This is Mr. Winkie from Winkie Burger.
Matt: Yeah, Carrie's gonna hook him up downstairs outside her front door so people can use him as an intercom.
Kevin: No, she's not. So you wasted your whole day, skipped all your classes, and all you have to show for it is a tubby burger boy?
      Carrie: Hey, he's a collector's item.
Kevin: Well, why don't you put him out by the curb so they can come collect him in the morning?

    • Carrie: You know, if I hadn't taken the day off, I never would have found this little treasure at the flea market. What do you think he's worth?
Matt: A genuine, original Mr. Winkie from Winkie Burger? $50 bucks, easy.
      Carrie: I paid $75.

    • (Kevin leaves for school, but comes back quickly)
Kevin: Excuse me. This class I'm hurrying to get to... you're in it.
Carrie: I know. I'm not going.
Kevin: Why, don't you feel well?
Carrie: Oh, no, I feel fine. I just have been working really hard lately, so I'm giving myself a mental health day.
      (Car horn honks)
Kevin: You're cutting all your classes? You're gonna miss my lecture.
Carrie: I'll just borrow the notes from Paul.
Kevin: Carrie, you're missing my point.
      (Car horn honks again)
      Carrie: Ashley's waiting.
Kevin: Yeah, I heard. Carrie, I just don't think you're setting a very good example for impressionable, young girls like - (Car horn honks again) Ashley, knock it off! You're just lucky I'm not planning a pop quiz. Or am I?
Carrie: Well, I'll just have to take your class again next semester.
      Kevin: Okay, no pop quiz.

    • Mary-Kate: Why do you want to hang out with those stuck-up cheerleaders, anyway?
Ashley: Well, 'cause they're the most popular girls in school.
      Carrie: But you're popular.
      Ashley: Sure, compared to Mary-Kate.

    • Ashley: Hey, dad, we're gonna take a ride along Lake Shore Drive. Oh, yeah, I need $40 bucks for a new backpack.

    • (Kevin is reading Ashley's school newspaper article)
Kevin: "As for the cheerleaders, their pyramid was shoddy, their splits were a joke, and you could hardly hear the cheers over the flapping of Courtney Collins' thighs."
      Ashley: What do you think?
Kevin: Ashley, you can't print that.
      Ashley: Why not?
      Kevin: You misspelled "shoddy."

  • Notes

    • This is the second time Jennifer runs out halfway through a scene because of an uncomfortable moment. The first being in "When a Man Leaves a Woman" when Ashley wrongfully orders a handbag, in this episode it's when Mary-Kate goes goth in front of Courtney.

    • Orlando Brown also played Eddie Thomas on That's So Raven.

    • Francesca Smith, who played Gabrielle in this episode, also did the voice as the infamous Helga Pataki on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon Hey Arnold!.

    • This was the last new episode aired of the series, although it was filmed before what was to be the season finale, which later became the series finale.
