  • The alien UFOs are using space junk to hide a remote operated or autonomous spacecraft that is causing SHADO shuttle craft to crash.

This episode demonstrates how even those who are involved in the setting up of a vital defence organisation can, due to political and financial pressure turn against those in the position of responsibility for the safety of those they are trying to protect (in this case the people of earth).

This cleverly written story confronts the pressures placed upon all organisations set up by government and relying upon public money, those in control of the money do not necessarily have any idea of the pressures and problems faced by those with the responsibility for actually doing the work. A fact we can all see in the day-to-day politics reported on the news and other public media, the same now as it was then and doubtless will be in the future.moreless

  • TRIVIA (3)

    • Goof: The three Interceptors are each armed with a single missile. Yet they are sent to destroy four separate pieces of space junk, as clearly noted in dialog.

    • Henderson is very much out of character here. In episodes such as "Identified" and "Confetti Check A-OK," Henderson is one of the driving forces behind the creation of SHADO. In other episodes, he and Straker have differences of opinion. But he never went as far as to suggest SHADO's shutdown as he did here.

    • The method of space junk disposal they use here (explosive limpet devices) would never be used in real life. It would blast large, trackable pieces of debris into thousands of smaller pieces, each of which would still be hazardous to navigation because of its high orbital velocity. De-orbiting to burn up in the atmosphere is the preferred method of eliminating space junk.

  • QUOTES (3)

    • Straker: Miss Ealand, when James Henderson calls, tell him I'm unavailable.
Miss Ealand: And when he arrives, sir?
Straker: Well, show him right in! The red carpet treatment. He's a very important man. You can expect him at three o'clock.

    • Straker: Congratulations. But don't let my delight at your survival blind you to the fact that we have a few matters to discuss.

    • Straker: Do you realize what you're doing?
Henderson: Yes, commander, I do. I'm proving to the commission that your organization in its present form is an expensive and unworkable luxury.
