  • Code 5!

I have only the vaguest memories of this show, it aired back in the late 90’s, but there was only 6 episodes made. Think I only actually watched one, but what I saw interested me, so when I spotted the season on sale I thought, what the hell, may as well give it a go.

For most of this episode it could be prety much any police drama. We have an officer (Jack Davenport, you know, from Pirates of the Caribean) whose partner is celebrating his stag night as the episode opens. So straight away we know that either the floppy haired partner will die, or turn out evil.

We also learn, fairly quickly, that Mike(Davenport) has a thing for the fiancee. Hmm.

But gradually, as Mike investigates his partner Jack’s non-turning up at the wedding, and a money trail, he begins to suspect that the new police in town aren’t all they say they are.

And when he finds out that they are “neutralising” suspects with carbon bullets, and using a sorta garlic tear-gas Mike begins to suspect that maybe Jack is a vampire.

But, from what I recall the word vampire is never used once in this episode.

Vampire Jack does raise the whole issue of why the police are trying to eradicate the vampires. Afterall, they need humans, they aren’t interested in destroying mankind. They are just fighting back.

Plus we have Jane Bennet from Pride and Prejudice as a scientist-cop-type person, oh okay, the actress who played her in the BBC mini-series plays the Dr. here.moreless

Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

  • TRIVIA (5)

    • TRIVIA: Michael comments the tear gas used by Rice's team smells off. It is not tear gas, but garlic. Allicin, the chemical in garlic, acts as a repellent.

    • TRIVIA: Religious symbols, such as the traditional cross, are not used by the squad as weapons or deterrents as this seems to be purely psychological and depends on the individual's beliefs.

    • TRIVIA: When feeding, a wound will heal over in a matter of minutes and can only be revealed by ultraviolet. The bite can be treated with a laser, which leaves a small scar. If left untreated, a human becomes suggestible and can be used by the Code Vs, and also develops an aversion to sunlight.

    • TRIVIA: Code Vs cannot be killed, only neutralized (reduced to ashes). They can regenerate from this state but it is unknown how. They can be neutralized by introducing wood or carbon into the heart, as well as sunlight. However, the resulting immolation is a violent explosion, causing fires.

    • The series never uses the word 'vampire,' a vampire is referred to as a 'Code 5;' the Roman numeral for the number 5 is V.

  • QUOTES (8)

    • Jack: We're a part of nature.
      Michael: So's Smallpox!

    • Jack: (reading Mike's best man speech) Well, you left it on the dashboard, I thought it was a cry for help!

    • Michael: (not liking March's implication that he's lying) I'm sorry, did I miss something - was I cautioned?

    • Michael: Our source turns up dead and you do a runner? What do you expect?!
Jack: They're a death squad, Mike! They've got orders to shoot me on sight!

    • Michael: Believe it or not, crying on my hands and knees to you is not my idea of fun.
      Frances: Might be mine though.

    • Jack: (seeing Mike holding a gun on him) Wooden ammo?
      Michael: Carbon.
Jack: State of the art... but then, so are we...
(Jack takes a step forward, Michael moves away, aiming at his head)
Jack: Blimey, didn't take you long to sign up.

    • Jack: Did they tell you I was evil?! It's what the church always says, Mike! Women, Black, disabled, gay... now us. Do you like living in the middle ages?

    • Michael: Thanks, Father, I have a job.
Harman: You're happy where you are after what you've seen?
Michael: Sorry, I don't think I have what it takes.
Harman: Oh? I heard you did.
Michael: That was self-defence, not a career move!
