Show Summary

Under One Roof was a six episode midseason replacement series in spring 1995 and CBS' answer for those who wanted a drama series featuring a predominantly African American cast. It revolved around the upper middle class Langston family in Seattle, Washington, headed by patriarch Neb Langston (James Earl Jones), a widowed police sergeant who shares a home with his married son Ron and his family (Maggie, Charlotte & Derrick), his daughter Ayesha and foster son Marcus.

  • This was a great drama about an African-American family dealing with everyday struggles just like everyone else. Probably, ahead of its time since it was so short lived.

This was a great drama about an African-American family dealing with everyday struggles just like everyone else. Probably, ahead of its time since it was so short lived. However, one could argue that it paved the way for the likes of Soulfood, Barbershop and even Linc's. In my opinion, the cast was a great ensemble of a who's who in black Hollywood. You had James Earl Jones leading the cast, Essence Atkins of Half n Half on UPN, Merlin Santana who played on the Cosby Show and later on the Steve Harvey Show. I could go on but you get the point. It seem to be very well written and casted. For the small period it was on the air it dealt with teens and peer pressure, infidelity and of course racsim. Pretty much your receipe for a black drama. But this show and the cast made it so real and put you in the drama with you. At least that is the way I felt. Those 6 shows or more are worth having or at least studying in some tv classroom. Soulfood and others should thank the creators of this show.moreless
