I remember when this episode first aired, and the segment that stuck out in my mind, and still does to this day, was the part that featured escaped killer Edward Harold Bell. Reenactments showed Bell exposing himself to children in a Pasadena, Texas neighborhood. Twenty-something Larry Dickens was at home with his mother when they witnessed Bell's act of misconduct, so Dickens went over to confront Bell while Dickens's mother called police. As host Robert Stack put it, what happened next was every mother's worst nightmare. Bell exposed a .22 caiber pistol and shot Dickens, who then staggered over to his carport while his mother watched, still on the phone with the police. Bell then got an M1 Carbine rifle out of his van, walked over to the carport and fired a shot at wounded Dickens, in full view of his horrified mother, who was now outside holding her dying son in her arms. Bell ran away and was pursued by police. One officer on a motorcycle was in Bell's gunsight but, fortunately, his rifle misfired and he was arrested. Dickens's weeping sister was shown confronting Bell as he was taken into custody. Bell later escaped, if memory serves me by jumping bail (if that's the case, what was he doing out on bail in the first place?) and was on the lam for years. A later episode had an update in which, again if memory serves me, Bell was arrested in Panama and returned to the U.S. to stand trial. According to a police periodical in Galveston, Bell is serving a 70 year sentence and will be eligible for parole in 2013. Also according to this periodical, Bell is a suspect in a string of slayings in the area that occurred before and after he murdered Larry Dickens. I pray Bell will never again see the light of day.moreless
